saw 6 bald eagles!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Looked out my kitchen window and saw a bald eagle sitting in a big cottonwood tree, about 500 ft. from our house. Fumbled around trying to get the telephoto lens on and used my last picture. Then here came 5 more, flying in and landing in the trees! You could hear them calling to each other! They over-winter around here. We usually see several during the winter, but 6 at a time, so close, is a first. Just had to share my excitment.

What a blessing and how exciting. Where do you live?

Southeast Idaho, along the Snake River.

I can share your excitement. Bald eagles spend summers in our area and I saw my first one this summer, flying over my house. What a beauty! Amy

For anyone who might be interested... There is a wonderful train trip in Romney, West Virginia, called the Potomac Eagle. It is a lovely trip along the north branch of the Potomac River. The train guides report that eagles are seen on 90 some percent of the trips. We have made the trip two times and have seen eagles on both of the trips. i imagine that it would be a lovely trip to make when the leaves are changing in the fall. We have not yet experienced that yet. Anyone out there with reports on that?

oops---I believe I made a mistake on that posting. I believe that it is the south branch of the Potomac River.

Tammy, it might be the North Fork of the South Branch of the Potomac River, I'm from the Davis, WV, area, and the Potomac River has soooo many branches it can get really confusing !!! Annie in SE OH.

We are fortunate here in N. Missouri to have bald eagles in relative abundance (tho I've never seen 6 together at one time!) It is pretty awesome to see the return of something so precious to our area. Almost anytime I go down to the Thompson River, which is 2 miles from our house, I can see one or two flying around. Sometimes I even see one perched in a tree next to the creek right down the road from us.

We have a lot of eagles around here too.(WI) Two hang out on our farm all summer. I know a guy about thirty miles away who raised hogs outdoors in a sustainable pasture system along the St Croix river. He went out of business because the eagles were harvesting all his baby pigs. Wasnt allowed by law to even as much as put a radio on in the field to scare them away! That was the first time I thought the endangered species act had been a tad unreasonable.
