Does the manual lens offer a greater range in Depth of Field or is the DV Format limiting the depth of field range?

Can I have an object in the foreground in complete focus with the backround completly out of focus? Is this possible with DV? Would the manual lens fix this?

I have tried setting the aperture to 1.8 but I still dont get the effect I want.
