HILO, Hawai‘i — About 2,000 Big Island homes and businesses in South Kona and Hilo lost electricity briefly yesterday afternoon when the new power plant in Haina shut down for the second time in two weeks.

Miles Nagato of Hawai‘i Electric Light Co. said the cause of the power loss was under investigation.

He said the plant shut down automatically just before 2 p.m. to avert damage to the rest of the system. Power was restored within three minutes using other generating sources.

On Dec. 19, about 5,000 customers lost service when the same Hamakua Energy Partners’ generator failed. The cause of that incident has not been disclosed.
