New to homeschooling, thinking of changing from a formal curriculum for next year,to a more unit study type curriculum, would like opinions, pros and cons!

I think unit studies are an excellent approach. But you need to be prepared for lots of preparation time (which will vary with the number and ages of your kids) and finding some others to coop with will certainly help spread the load around. We tried unit studies for a while, but discovered we were all happier with a textbook approach, modified to fit our needs. That's the beauty of home schooling, you can have your cake and eat it too. Good luck.

Carol,We've tried it all. Started with standard old fashioned ME Teach-you listen approach-(Abeka)lots of planning and follow through on my part. Both are not my strong points. Then went to unit approach, used KONOS.We loved it but is also very plannning intensive but lots of fun. Then we went to a workbook system-Christian Light. Effective,no planning but boring for my kids. Then we discovered Video School.Minimum planning, follow up on testing etc.,but I know they've at least had the opportunity to hear alot of biblical, interesting info. Our oldest two are in college now and they say the video school was the biggest help to prepare for college. The only problem I can say we have with the video schooling is the cost. But God keeps providing! I'd be glad to answer any questions. This will be our 10th year but I most certainly don't know it all. I think that you should look at your personality, your kid's personalities and needs...need structure, freedom, creativity, learning disabilities, spritual needs etc. Homeschooling is like chili- everybody makes it differently but it's ALWAYS good!

Carol i have been homeschooling 7 years, my kids are 11, 10, and 7. I have used all the approaches of homeschooling like everbody else. But i finally had to take a look at myself and decided what i wanted for my children. The most important thing for me was for them to have a deep understanding of our lord Jesus Christ and if they have that they will be doing great! There is a difference between wisdom and knowledge the kids coming out of public school have knowledge but no wisdom. If my kids can have wisdom they can do anything in life! So we do our basics like Math, Reading, Writing and then the other subjects we do alot of reading and literature based history and hands on kind of stuff. Lets face it there is not many children out there who have the responsibility that most homesteading children have. Oh and 1 more thing there is a great website for homeschooling it is www.homeschooloasis.com check it out! It is a breath of fresh air. If you have any questions feel free to e-mail me.

Hi Carol, Like many I started 13 years ago with a textbook approach (Christian Liberty) and then got more eclectic as I went along. My two sons, now 16 and 18, did fine with that approach, but my 9 yod doesn't have the patience. We are using the Charlotte Mason approach (sort of) for her, with shorter lessons, more real books. You can find out more about it at http://homepage.bushnell.net/~peanuts/faq1.html.
