New Year's Day 2001

greenspun.com : LUSENET : People Photography : One Thread

Had a little time between the Michigan game (Go Blue!) and the Rose Bowl on New Year's, so I made a quick trip to my usual hunting grounds to see what was happening.

This is a quick-and-dirty flatbed negative scan. I'm woefully behind on my printing.

Hah! That is what New Year's Day usually looks like, except there's no snow where I have been on NYD for the last 10 years. Maybe there should be some broken beer bottles there too, I don't know.

It's definitely got its groove on.

neat. but do you agree that it would have been fortunate had the guy taken one giant step back?

Hey! Street, lamposts, storefronts, a little guy in the background.... its, dare I say it, "Atgetic?"....

I also like to see the tad bit of blurred snow flurry. Have always liked photos that show falling snow. Cool.

Thanks for the comments.

If he took a big step back, he'd block the view of the empty sidewalk disappearing into the distance. I think explicitly showing the empty sidewalk reinforces the overall mood of the photo. (Of course, I didn't even think about it until Wayne mentioned it.)

"Atgetic?" Hmmmm, I think I've heard of Atget. I think. Maybe I should visit the library more often. . .

Thanks for the comments.

Perhaps the bottles are under the snow. Actually, they're probably in the trash cans--it's amazing how many people actually put their trash in a trash can if there's one available.

Thanks for the link. Interesting. I want to go back and look at his stuff several times before I start yapping.
