Garbanzo beans & seed saving

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I am in south-central Michigan and wonder if anyone with similar climate has grown garbanzo beans (chick peas) successfully. I have tryed a couple of times and failed. Also, has anyone posted the Seed Saver's link and I missed it. Please repost. Thanks -

I am in michigans thumb and i have never tried to grow garbanzo beans, however I felt compelled to answer because I love them and use them alot. Bob's Red Mill sells garbanzo flour , which I use to make crushed bean soup with ALOT. Hummus also and baba ghanouj My educated guess is that they should grow if started early enough. Being of Meditteranean origin they need a fairly temperate climate which is somewhat similar to michigan for our 2 months of summer. Early start is the key here i think, along with maybe a soil innoculant?
