Book Club and Other Magazines(Library)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I quit all my book clubs and narrowed down my magazines. Sorta, Besides the best imho, Countryside, I get Country, Country Extra, Country Journal, Farm & Ranch Living, Country Living Garden, and Herbs for Health. There are others I've had and others I'd like, but money says different.

What other magazines do you read? Are you in a book club? What do you recommend?

We get a lot of magazines, most of them are gifts, and some are my husband's. Countryside, US News and world reports, Smithsonian, Nat'l Geographic, Scientific American, Acres USA (about organic farming, highly ecommended), I used to get Quilter's newsletter, United Caprine News, Dairy Goat Journal, and Alpines International. I highly recommend all four of those, the last is for Alpine dairy goat enthusiasts.

I'm cutting down on mags too. They're piling up in the spare room and it kills me to throw any away!

Will keep getting Countryside and The Atlantic Monthly.

Countryside is now the only magazine that I subscribe to. I also belong to the Mystery Guild book club. It's cheaper, of course, to go to the library - but they want you to bring the books back!!

I recommend used book stores and thrift shops such as the Sallies and Catholic Charities to get books and magazines.

I'm lucky in that I work with a bunch of insatiable readers - who don't mind spending money as much as I do! They bring in their magazines for the waiting room, so I have a full scope of gardening, country and women's magazines to read. One of the MDs also brings in mystery/adventure/thrillers and leaves them for us. We all keep a stack of books in our locker to borrow/loan. We use the name and address labels that so many charities send out to mark as ours the ones we want to keep.

We get C.side, MEN, Organic Gardening, Utne Reader, and Maxim. Also tend to accumulate assorted mags from the library's recycling bin (it seems that people sometimes throw out magazines - weird, huh?). Used to have Country Journal, but it started seeming a little repetitive and superficial after I got C.side. Could be a connection there.

What a great topic Cindy!

I belong to QPB (Quality Paperback Bookclub) and they can be reached online.

I rotate my subscriptions to stretch my mind. Currently now get CS of course, as well as Talk (so stupid really-won't renew), Budget Travel, Adbusters (media mag), and several trade magazines for my work.

I pick up an occassional copy of the following (not worth a full subscription 'cause I AM frugal (!) and can't spend that much on magazines): Archaeology Today, Discover, Popular Science, Biography, Harvard Business Review, Nation, Whole Earth Review, Utne Reader, Fine Cooking, Fast Company, Wired, Publisher's Weekly, Entrepreneur and others. This list does not include those that I read online. Check out the New York Times on-line.

Hi Cindy, Have you ever read "BACK HOME" mag. it's pretty good but Countryside is my favorite. I belong to Literary Guild they have a good selection of fiction and some cooking/ craft books. They do buy 2 get 1 free a couple of times a year. They also have a good web site so you don't have to send back those annoying cards. Hope this helps. Nan

I noticed today a nice "plug" for Countryside Magazine in a magazine named Mountain Astrologer (on page 82).

I subscribe to way too many magazines--Countryside, Backwoods Home, Country Living, Herbs for Health, Herbalgram, Herb Companion, Herb Quarterly, Country Home, Goat Magazine. I also buy an occasional decorating magazine, usually country oriented. The decorating magazines all become a blur. I think they use the same photographs.
