Purple Negative

greenspun.com : LUSENET : B&W Photo - Film & Processing : One Thread

Recently I processed a roll of Kodak T-max 100 film and when I viewed it after the fixer it was quite purple. After the remainder of the fixing time and some time in the Foto-Flo it went away...mostly. It was processed with Ilford Ilfosol S developer, Kodak indicator stop and Ilford Universal fixer at recomended times and temps. I have experienced this years ago but not lately. What might cause this?

I look forward to your help.

With TMX you should use unused fixer and a fixer without hardener.

Try again: With TMX you should use a fixer that's fresh and without hardener.

If you looked at back threads you will see that this has been covered many times.

The purple tint has nothing to do with fixing. Although Tmax films are harder on fixer than other films.

To make the tint go away, either wash a long time, or use a hypo clearing agent of some form (Kodak HCA, Heico PermaWash, sodium sulfite in water) as part of the wash process.

Also the tint will go away over time. It is part of the antihalation or sensitizing dye set.

BTW there is some evidence that only rapid fixers should be used with modern films.

Hi Rob. Just after fixing, put water in the tank and wash with strong inversions. Repeat till the water il clear. Then, process normally with hypo clearing. Robert. (sorry for my English, I am a Frenchmen from Montréal, Québec!)
