Oh my....I should be embarrassed. I'm sure I have many more than that sitting out on bookshelves, and probably 10 times that which are boxed up. Most of mine are also Christian (fiction and non-fiction), a lot of Homesteading/animal books, other reference type books, craft books, a few non-Christian novels (Tom Clancy, Dale Brown, etc.), history & genealogy type books, and cook books. And then there's the children's books.... I don't have much free time, but manage to cram reading in here & there.

Wow, did I ever get a surprise when I went to counting them. I didn't realize I had so many. I have somewhere close to 500 as some are still boxed from the last move and I didn't open and count them. Many are reference books. Some novels are read annually, others---well seldom.

I've got three large book cases full and one small one. Books are mostly about art, photojournalism (that was my profession for years), history, homesteading, organic gardening, wildlife behavior, wildlife and plant field guides and woodturning. Of course, I've got my Bibles too.

You had to ask! I counted over 700 last Spring when I realized that every bookshelf, closet, and spare corner in my house was crammed with books. I set a goal of paying off my mortgage by the end of 2001, and realized that I had to get rid of some stuff- (figured I could either have a homestead, or books about homesteading!)- so, started selling off my treasured collection of gardening, homesteading, animal husbandry, etc books. Unfortunately, I realized that I could make some decent money by selling on ebay, and I started buying MORE books to sell. But, it's easier and faster to buy them than it is to sell, so once again I have a surplus!

Will this thread be around for a while while I count??? Yikes, maybe there would be more room for me in this house if I could bring myself to get rid of some???

-- diane (gardiacaprines@yahoo.com), January 15, 2001.

My spouse says I have too many. I feel I'll never have enough. I'll have to take a count. Hundreds, or maybe likely over a thousand, with probably less than a dozen fiction. Over 300 just in cookbooks alone after a cookbook-only count several years.

I have no idea. I think 2,000 would probably be a conservative estimate . . . no joke.

I have mostly (not necessarily in this order): Gardening, how-to, animals, spirituality/philosophy, and fiction books. Of the fiction, I have mostly sci-fi/fantasy, mystery, and historical.

I may have been a librarian in a former life. ;-)

More than I need, and not nearly enough.

HERE HERE! It looks like I'm not the only one. My husband sometimes wonders if I love my books more than him. LOL. annette

-- annette (j_a_henry@yahoo.com), January 15, 2001.

Geeeeez, you hadta ask! I started counting and came up with over 200 on one bookshelf, have another bookshelf with at least that many, plus the shelves inthe kitchen - not even counting my National Geographic mags! At least 600+!!!! And I'm not done yet.... :-)

-- Judi (ddecaro@snet.net), January 15, 2001.

Right now we have 75 or so liquor boxes filled with books waiting for husband to install built-in bookshelves in our "library". At about 20 books per box that's at least 1,500 books! Of course many are children's classics. Many on Catholicism, animals, gardening, classics, and art/music.

Okay... I know I have 1000's of books.... I love to read... so have read most of them and are in the process...

and I know this won't help you folks like me with books addictions... but I found on an egroup... a place to buy and sell books.. actually several places...

you have to register with e-groups... no biggie...

unlike e-bay... you deal directly with the person selling the books...

I have gotten some great books at great prices for my son and homeschooling.. and for myself... I keep a notebook for new prices on books that I am looking for... so I know if I'm getting a deal or not...

Booksnstuff has lots of great children books and much homeschooling material... lots of Christian homeschooling books... http://www.egroups.com/group/booksnstuff

For the Catholic homeschooler there is... Cathswap http://www.egroups.com/group/cathswap

Family Used Books and BedRock Books is another similar site... http://www.egroups.com/group/0_FAMILYUSEDBOOKS_0 http://www.egroups.com/group/BedrockBooks

Secular Homeschooler Books... self explainatory... http://www.egroups.com/group/A-Secular-Homeschooler-Sale

Unskoolbkshop... has a gammat of books... http://www.egroups.com/group/unskoolbkshop

Does anyone else have sites to share with buying books??? Like I need more... but you never know... ;-} Happy reading...

Ohhhh - I'm in seventh heaven!! To be on a forum with other readers! Not to mention that I can print this out and show it to my husband - he also thinks that I have too many books, spend too much money on books...

I'm not even going to start counting!! The floor to ceiling 13 foot long shelves in the basement are full, the paperback shelf (7 - 4' shelves) is jammed as well and I have at least as many boxes of books in the shed as I do boxes of fabric (another thing he doesn't quite understand!). What I need are more bookshelves in this house!!

-- Polly (tigger@moultrie.com), January 16, 2001.

We don't have too many books, just not enough shelves. Houses don't need walls, just shelves:~}

-- Cindy (atilrthehony_1@yahoo.com), January 16, 2001.

About 425 if you dont count magazines and paper back, still buying though. Most are gardening, clasics and philosophy and health.

-- kathy h (ckhart55@earthlink.net), January 16, 2001.

Yeah, what Cindy said. I've often thought that people building houses (or just walls) could save themselves a lot of trouble by not inclosing one side in drywall -- just build shelves. For books of course. Fill the shelves with books and they'll keep down any noise transmission from the other side of the wall!

MaryAnn, you do know about Half.Com, don't you?

-- Joy Froelich (dragnfly@chorus.net), January 16, 2001.

yuppers... Joy!!! ;-}

To many to fit in my library, never enough to stop me from buying "just one more" at the library freinds quarter hardback bookstore. Its amazing howmany books you can buy with ten dollars when they are twenty-five to fifty cents each.

Well glad to see that I am not the only one!!!! I am dreaming that in our next house we will have a library. We have more children's books than our library does. I am not really joking on that.. And we have homeschooling, homesteading, gardening, cooking, crafting, Saving money, How to's, parenting, my collection of Countryside magazines and Bibles... I am gradually getting rid of the fiction. Everyone in my family loves to read. I got my love of reading from my grannie. My favorite memories are spending summer days in her porch swing reading books from her collection. I hope that my children love reading 1/2 as much as me. Now my husband swears that I must have a book for everything, well if I don't I could probably find one.

I'm sure its only 7-800 since I am diligent about culling them every so often. All kinds of topics from novels to science to travel to memoirs and cooking. Can't forget food...food memoirs are my favorite.

-- Anne (HT@HM.com), January 21, 2001.

I love books .I love tag saleing because I hate to pay full price for books .I gotten some really great ones cheap. If Hubby ever finishes this house maybe I could unpack them all !

-- Patty {NY State} (fodfarms@slic.com), January 21, 2001.
