Crisis in the Congo

greenspun.com : LUSENET : A.M.E. Today Discussion : One Thread

Reports from overseas news agencies are indicating an attempted coup d' etat against Congolese leader Laurent Kabila occured on yesterday. While some internal Congolese sources are denying the death of Kabila, Brithish news sources confirm his death at the hands of a bodygaurd. Political instability in the Congo has direct repercussions on stability in neighboring countries like Burundi and Rwanda. In fact the entire south-central region of Africa is impacted because of Zambia and Zimbabwe's proximity. A close look at the globe suggests that geo-political disequilibrium in south-central Africa will also impact the 17th Episcopal District. The evils of internesant war, famine, poverty and illiteracy deter many of our overseas AME brothers and sisters from enjoying the bounty of life. Our individual and collective prayers should go out for all people in the region. May God's Providential protection prevail. QED

Bill thank you for bringing this information to our attention! I will pray and I will put this on our church prayer list. Bill I did not hear anything about this on the national news. Do you have a source for information on what is happening in the countries of Africa? Thanks

There are conflicting reports. Initial reports from Birtish sources, and from Zimbabwe, indicated that Kabila was assassinated. The internal affairs/information minister for the Congo is reporting he is "injured". In either case, son Gen. Joseph Kabila now holds the reins of power.

For more detail, refer to CNN.

To my sister Denise

CNN always is a great source for news but in addition, you can find it here at A.M.E. Today on the World News section of A.M.E. Today web site and there also is a complete News From Africa section that is updated daily but which unfortunately did not do as good on this item as it normally does.

A.M.E. Today is alike a little country store, when you look around in the corners you would be amazed at what you can find!

News announces death of Laurent Kabila

Just to keep this thread both fresh and accurate, it was announced at approximately 3 p.m. Thursday Jan. 18, 2001, that Congolese leader Laurent Kabila had died.

It was reported that Kabila suffered, what proved to be fatal injuries, during an attempted coup d' etat, at the hands of a bodygaurd.

I continue the call for prayer earlier requested by Brother Dickens and now both for the Congo, the surrounding countries and the family of Laurent Kabila.
