Powdered Milk (How Long Will it Store)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

How long is it advisable to keep powdered milk? I have a large box of it in our spare frig. I usually just use it for the bread machine recipes. I have had this box for 8 months. Thanks.

Lynn, I just checked my box that I bought the other day it does not expire for 2 yrs, so I would say yours would still be good. There should be a date somewhere on it. I do not refrig. mine it is on the shelf in the storage room with the other dry good. God Bless.

I do not refrigerate dry milk powder either although I do put it in a big glass jar and keep it in the pantry.

When it gets past its freshness shelf life, you can mix it up with a pint of cultured buttermilk, set on the counter overnight and make some good buttermilk from it.

Oh dear! Please don't use that stuff. It is REALLY bad for you. A nutritionist friend of mine told me that it causes major arteriosclerosis. It has something to do with the temperature used in processing the milk for drying - alters the molecular structure of the milk.

Tiffani, my doctor recommended it!

I agree with Tiffany, the stuff is poison, and Dr.'s don't know squat about real nutrition, it is not taught in medical school!!!

Tiffany and Annie - I suspect you have fallen prey to yet another urban myth! Dry milk is nothing more than dehydrated milk - ie. the water is removed! I have dried almost any veggie you can think of, and used dry milk in a plethora of recipes! It will work wonderfully, and is a cheap alternative. And also to Tiffany and Annie - can you give us any back-up to your fears? Maybe you are right, but I haven't seen any realistic research to bolster your thougthts! Please respond! And, of course, GL!
