San Diego seeks electric surcharge

San Diego Gas & Electric Wednesday said it will seek a 2.3 ct/kwh surcharge to help it recoup the higher wholesale cost of electricity. "This would add approximately $11.50 a month to the typical residential customer electric bill of $72 for the next five years, with the exception of low-income customers, who would be exempted from the surcharge," the company said. SDG&E also said it hopes to save $100-mil in costs by selling unneeded property, limiting new hiring and cutting back on contracting. The company has also resumed bill-collection efforts suspended last year when prices first spiked. The utility said residential customers' bills could go up $30 or more over the long term in order to recoup costs the company has incurred but not been able to pass through immediately.
