homemade aluminum can crusher

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I once saw instructions for how to build an aluminum can crusher out of what I believe was scrap lumber. but now I don't know where I saw it! I work for a non-profit organization in Dawson City, Yukon, Canada and manage two recycling depots and a landfill.

If I were able to find these plans, we could re-use a lot of lumber from the landfill and encourage more people to recycle aluminum cans, as crushing the cans is a real space saver.

Any other re-use ideas you may have for things like tires, pallets, 5 gal pails etc would be really helpful

thanks in advance...Cam

Now this isn't from any plans I know about, just came from my poor old brain such as it is, but it oughta work. Take a couple 2"x4" pieces of equal length (other sizes would probabaly work too I imagine). I'd say they need to be 18" to 24" in length anyways. Now get a hinge of decent strength and attach the hinge at one end of both pieces of wood. This will give you something to crush the cans between. I'd open them ecough to put a can between them (on the floor of course) then push down on the end of the upper board with your foot (be sure to keep your balance by steadying yourself with what ever you can hold on to securely) and your foot pressure with a little weight behind it should do the trick! Now I suppose you could fasten one side of this gizmo to the floor and maybe butt it up against a piece of wood on the wall or the like which will keep the can from wandering, theoretically anyways. Don't know how much merit this idea has but perhaps someone could polish the plans for a more efficient device if need be. Happy crushing (experimenting)!

Well I guess my old brain was on the right track! I just looked around on the net for the heck of it and guess what I found? you guessed it! They even use 2"x4"s! Well anyways here's the url for it:

This wont help you but it did work. Many years ago my brothers had bags of cans to crush and they took one of their trucks and jacked it up in the back so the wheels were just of the ground, put it in drive so the wheels would just turn and stood around tossing cans at the wheel they would go under the wheel and come out the other side crushed. things were going good until they had to pick up all those cans.

Our family accumulates a number of cans each week which I squash with a small anvil. Ten minutes of 'pumping iron' on Saturday does the trick!
