Convoy worth the time? (Senseless Horse Killing)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

For all those who offered words of support and encouragement concerning the convoy of horse trailers we organized to impress upon the judge that we want justice in the case of the two teens who shot my vet's horses: http://www.bangornews.com/cgi-bin/article.cfm?storynumber=28137 The judge's sentencing inspired phrases such as 'landmark' and unheard of' to be used in the paper. What a relief! I literally began to cry as I read it. We will not have to lay eyes on these two in town for at least five years, nor anywhere else after 8pm for that long.

Good for the judge for having what it takes to protect animals and people. Now if we can just get a judge with equal integrity when the authorities find out who is killing the last wild horses in the Mark Twain National Forest here in Missouri and prosecute them, and the wild horses out in Nevada, and who should have sentenced those cretins who killed the cats in the private rescue agency out in Nebraska (Kansas?) a few years back to more than a slap on the wrist. I don't buy into that "boys will be boys" garbage.

I'm too far away to be there physically but I'll be there in spirit. Sic 'em.

I was quite happy to read this story. It does my heart good to know that some people out there still have common sense.

I wonder if we could coordinate a convoy across the nation of horse trailers, you know, like a group starts at the tip of Maine, hands off to a group in NH, who hands off from there, all the way to California. Our convoy got lots of media attention because it was different; no yelling or standing in one spot. Each participant had signs on their trailers mentioning the animals they lost. We'd have to get quite the network to organize, but I think it could be done. I'll have to throw the idea onto some equine forums.

Interesting thought, Epona (the country-wide caravan). I wondered, though, when I read the article, how much of the sentence had to do with the death of the animals and how much to do with these boys shooting at cars (endangering people).

Hi Joy! Most definately, the sentences for them were due to shooting at vehicles. If they just up and shot two horses, it would have been just a misdemeanor. However, if such a public fuss had not been made about the loss of the horses, the judge would not have punished them so thouroughly. If they had taken a knife to the horses and left it at that, I doubt they would have been tried at all. That's why there is new legislation being introduced that would make killing livestock a felony(horses are considered livestock under Maine law). I've been invited to speak before the legislature about the new bill, but I doubt I'll accept. I'll let someone more comfortable with speaking in public do it:)

Good Heavens - go speak! These "kids" are sick, but only because they were not guided well by their "parents" and I suspect the latter are big-time losers! Problem is, folks who like animals are losers as long as these "animals" are allowed to roam free. Then there are the folks who own, like, and use guns responsibly, who are "losers" because these little ****** used guns in their horrific attack on society. GL! Brad in Buxton.

Epona:

Yes, go. Sometimes the least accomplished public speakers are the most effective ones. The legislatures get tired of hearing profession speakers, which is why your's might be very, very effective. Heck, cry when you describe what they did to the horses.

Yes!! Go speak!! And to make sure that this doesn't get swept under the huge gun-control rug, be sure to point out something I've read somewhere else on this forum: "If guns cause crime, then pencils cause misspelled words." This is about what those boys did to the horses, the boys' actions, but you can bet that someone will try to turn it into another argument against guns. With the nation's hysteria concerning that, the REAL problem will most surely get overshadowed and nothing will come of it unless someone's there to point it out.
