I keep telling Stuart that we need to move to Canada. He only thinks I'm half joking.... If I could move to any country in the world I'd want to move to Ireland, Australia or Canada.

Ireland because both my heritage and Stuart's is filled with Irish people and just because ... well I've always been drawn there because of the books I've read. Australia because it is so incredibly DIFFERENT and because I will be sad if Amanda isn't in the U.S. Canada because it is so remote, to me, it is remote. I'd go to the British Columbia area.

I am too old to want to think about a big move. Our kids are trying to get us to move across town to be nearer to them and I am reluctant to move from the place where we are comfortably residing.

A lot of people feel that way Doug. I think if you're really happy, you wouldn't want to move but Stuart's heart and my heart aren't here in Spivey's Corner. Which means that I'm sure one day we will be moving out of this house. I never thought we would but we've both sort of talked about it and made it up in our minds.

This subject has actually come up in our household because it isn't farfetched that my husband could be transferred for temporary duty in Europe somewhere. They have offices all over the world. And they pay big bucks for the employees to do 1-5 year stints over there. We'd come home with lots of cash because they'd pay for housing and the whole nine yards. I think I would move to Europe if it came up. It would be a great learning opportunity for our young daughter. But I'd have no interest in moving anywhere else except maybe Australia but definitely not the middle east or Asia.

Canada remote??? Well, we *do* get American tv shows.. :-) BC is remote form here, since I'm on the East Coast, but there's a heck of a lot more people in BC than there is (I think) in the whole of the Maritimes. You'd have to go pretty far noth in BC to be really remote, i think. i dunno, never been there. But here - here in this province the whole middle is nothing but forest.

Well now you have to remember that I'm an Amurkin, all of Canada seems remote to me. heh. What I'd be aiming for in the move is the most temperate part of Canada that I could get. I don't want to live in a Zone 3...I'm spoiled by mild winters here in NC.

Europe. I'd want to visit it before I made a decision to live there.

Answer, why yes, been there done that! :-)

I did have to come to the USA for a visit, 3 weeks in 1997, just to make sure it seemed like somewhere I could live. Not a very long time to make such a decision, but I did get a feel for the place, and nothing made me want to run screaming from it. And one of us had to move, the phone bills were house deposit sized.

My eventual plan is for us to move back to Australia though, in the medium to long term. More temperate weather, socialised medecine and pensions, all things that appeal to me, especially the older I am when we go back there.

there are so many ifs for me with this question. as i am, i'd pick england, london probably. but IF i had loads and loads of money and could get by in cantonese, i'd move to hong kong in a second. half a second. and IF i spoke japanese, i'd like to live in tokyo. for a little while.

setting my sights a bit closer to home, i have fantasies about living on either coast: a small town in massachusetts, or an island off oregon or washington...i sometimes wish i wasn't so content in my midwestern life. that'd make it much easier for me to pick up and move.

Being too comfortable is a reason why people won't move, it's why people stay in crappy jobs, etc. I don't like being what I consider "too" comfortable. It makes a person stagnate. I try to take small steps in doing things I've never done before. I find that I always am better for having done it. Or at least tried it.

I've dreamed of moving to Canada for the past 15 years. Then, suddenly in the last couple of months, I've had the opportunity to actually consider doing it. And I found out that no matter how many naive dreams you have of moving to another country, when it comes down to it, you're faced with the same considerations you'd have if you were moving to another part of the same country--plus a whole lot more. In the end, my wife and I decided that Toronto was too expensive and too big (it's anything but remote) to provide the kind of lifestyle we want for our family.

It's a tough decision to make when you're considering other people besides yourself and mate. We ARE going to move away from here and we've both decided it will be after his parents pass away. But then again, if the opportunity arises before then we're out of here. Neither of us want to spend the rest of our lives in Spivey's Corner.

Been there done that. I am a Canadian national who also has US citizenship. I've lived in South Florida for 5 years, but I found the summers too hot there. If I ever won the lottery, I would live in Canda and the US, maybe 6 months in each place. That way I could have the best of both worlds. It was a great experience, I have 2 countries instead of 1. I also enjoyed working in the US, as I find the people more laid back. All around, for me it was a great experience.
