No injuries in engine room fire that sends supply ship back to Halifax

HALIFAX (CP) - An engine room fire has sent a supply ship for the Sable Island natural gas rigs back to port. None of the 13-member crew was injured when the fire, aboard the vessel Thebaud C, broke out early Saturday morning. The ship was about 180 kilometres southeast of Halifax, heading a natural gas field near Sable Island.

The 81-metre vessel was expected to return under escort to the Halifax port Saturday evening, said a spokesman with the rescue co-ordination centre.

The Canadian warship HMCS St. John's was dispatched to the scene, but stood down after the fire was extinguished and the engine restarted.

A spokesman for the vessel's owner, Secunda Marine in Halifax, said the blaze was extinguished by crew on board the Thebaud C.

"The crew, with the ship's fire equipment, handled the incident," said Don MacLeod. "The fire was put out quickly."

The Thebaud C is employed by Sable Offshore Energy Inc.
