Does anyone have a milking devon I believe this is correct spelling,if so what color are they and what are some of there traits. A friend of mine has a beef herd and he has got what he calls a short legged holstien, I think it may be a milking devon , thanks in advance. dave

Milking Devon's are not anything like holstiens. They are a solid red, will give you a little more milk then beef breeds (how much they really give is unknown as they weren't used so much for their milk as for draft power & meat), & oxen. In fact, dispite the dairy steers being the popular breeds used today for oxen, Milking Devons & Milking Shorthorns use to be the breed of choice for oxen in the pioner days. (Milking Shorthorns are a dairy breed, & tend to be on the beefy side like Holstiens.) For detailed info on any breed of cattle, horse, sheep, goat, & some other types of animals, go to this web site. www.ansi.okstate.edu/breeds/

I hope this helps.

hi, i'm sorry to tell you, that shorthorns are not beefy holsteins. holsteins are large milk cows with lots of bone showing. shorthorns are large meaty animals. how do i know? we raise them there shorthorns. i have never been happy with any holstein, but they are the back bone of dairies. And just so you know, they can be real mean!

I never said that shorthorns were holstiens. And there are both a beef & milking breeds of shorthorn. How do I know? I've seen both, talked to owners, & will soon be buying both. I originaly said that holstiens & MILKING shorthorns were on the beefy (meaty) side of all dairy breeds. And it's not fair to label all shorthorns like you did. Every animal is different, & I've seen & handled enough of them to know better. However, tha main question wasn't about holstiens or shorthorns, is was about milking devons. I was only trying to give him a point of reference (since I knew from the question that he had allready seen holstiens).

animalfarm, I was talking about the holstiens being mean, not my babies. my herd sire is about 2600 lbs of softie. we have had shorthorns in our family for at least 4 geneations, up to my husband and my self. with our son's and their children, this will be 6 gen. we have always been around cattle and other assorted creatures of the farm world. our herd is about half and half. In the old days we called shorthorns' Durhams. Sorry if I offended you, was just droping some input. The knowledge of holstiens came from working with them.
