Please help. I have a pregnant pygmy that I expect is 1-2 weeks from giving birth. She seems to have some difficulty with breathing. It sounds like there may be some fluid built up in her lungs. I have Tylan 200 available for respiratory infetctions/pneumonia. Though I am concerned about adminstering it with the pregnancy. Can anyone provide information?

Frank, don't you have the box or bottle? It should tell you about use in pregant animals. I don't keep Tylan around unless I have calves and I don't know about it for goats. Does it talk about what to give sheep? You can go by that dosage for goats. Does the goat have a fever? A lot of my goats sit around and moan a lot the last few weeks of pregnancy.

Though I would be watching her very carefully, I don't administor antibiotics unless they have a fever. Tylan is my favorite antibiotic, and is so rarely used that I don't have to worry about resistance with it on incoming stock. Tylan 50 is formulated for kids, and 200 for adults, and can be given sub q though we usually give the loading dose IM, or give all shots to very sick animals IM. If you are going to use it anyway we use the 200 at 6cc per 100 pounds. I would also like was previously stated, just make sure that she isn't just so heavy with kid, that her lung capacity is just smaller, and she isn't just distressed from this. Pygmy's have such small (cobbie) bodies, I would guess that is the problem, unless you are seeing nasal discharge also. I have never had any problems giving it to pregnant does, or heard any problems. Vicki
