Looking for picture of USS Henrico(APA45) limping under Golden Gate

greenspun.com : LUSENET : San Francisco History : One Thread

Two weeks before the assault on Okinawa, while my father was assigned as a Navy radioman to the 77th Army Div. assaulting a neighboring island, a Kamikaze struck the USS Henrico (APA45) killing 169. The ship limped under its own power to the Bay for repairs and stopped traffic on the Golden Gate as people marvelled at the sight. I would really like a picture of this, if one is available, to add to my fathers story in a family history I am compiling. Thank you!

I was a passenger on The HENRICO that embarked from Treasure Island in August 1945 and sailed to the Philippinnes. It took 28 days and made one stop near Guam. We were let off for R&R at Tacloben Town and then taken and disembarked on The southern part of Leyte. I was later transfered to Manicani Navy Ship Repair Base.

You might get lucky contacting some of the crewmembers of the following ships:

The USS Bush survivors were picked up by the Henrico: http://www.ussbush.com/memory4.htm

USS Chilton (APA-38) was the Henrico's sister ship: http://usschilton.tripod.com/three.html
