Where can I buy mangel beet seeds?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Does anyone know where I can buy mangel beet seeds? I get most of the "regular" seed catalogs, no luck there. Thank you very much Cynthia

Are you talking about Sugar Beets? If so, call Gurneys Seed (800) 824-6400.

The sugar beets (or the ones grown commercially around here in NW Minn.) are rounder and all white inside. The beets I am looking for are long and skinnier (shaped like a huge carrot) and are dingy purple on the outside and light purple and white inside. They are used for livestock feed. Last year a neighbor (when I couldn't find any seed) gave me a packet that she later told me was 15-20 years old. Amazingly enough many came up and my chickens, hogs, rabbits loved them (especially the tops - next year I will try giving them the beets at a smaller size!) I tried to let a few go to seed with no luck. The seed packet was from a familiar seed company -can't remember who; but they don't carry them anymore. I used to see them in seed catalogs years ago, explaining they were used as feed for many kinds of livestock; but now that I need them, I can't find them. Thank you, Cynthia

Jung's here in Wisconsin sells them. www.jungseed.com They do catalog orders and online orders, as well as their stores here. I don't know if they have a minimum order or shipping rate. If they do, and you just want a packet or three, email me -- I'll go buy them and send them to you for just whatever it costs me. However, if you decide to buy other stuff from them, I recommend the Wisconsin 55 tomatoes -- yummy! And I don't know of another place that sells them.

If you do email me, remind me what this is about!

Shumways (803) 663-9771 have two mangels (long red and golden tankard) and two sugar beets. Jungs just have the long red. Prices are similar.

Thank you all very much! That is what I needed. I will order them from one of the places you mentioned as soon as I get my seed list totally in order - and Joy, I will certainly check out those tomatoes! I am also happy to learn of two varieties - didn't know there were two. And yes, Stan you are right, the sugar beets are used for livestock feed a bunch also. The mangels is just what I had used before and I know everything liked them and that they were easy for me to grow - thanks again to all of you for taking the time to help me! :-)
