Benny: We do have a camera that can take digital still photos. We can take the 3 monuments that relate to our issue. Does anyone know of any additional photos that may be needed?? Thanks, Doug

Mayor/monuments

According to the mayor's assistant there are "a lot" of statues around Selma. Since there are no written policies it makes me wonder how far back the precident extends.

I talked with City Councilwoman Nancy Sewell this afternoon. She told me that she was one of several people in about 1971 that had a monument of Benjamin Sterling Turner placed in Selma. I believe she told me it was placed in a cemetery. I don't know any more about it since it was just mentioned briefly during a conversation lasting 1 to 1 1/2 hours. Doug

Benny, I believe the Martin Luther King Walking Tour has plaques with photos & text located on city property along a 2 to 4 block area. I don't think plaque is the proper term ... they are mounted about 3 feet above ground and are large enough to play a poker game the 4 -6 people sitting around the thing. Someone help me out here. better term for "plaque"

from: Pat to: Doug

I believe the term is kieosk (sp?) to pronounce it, it sounds like: kee-osk.

Doug, We should get shots of all three monuments, their settings, relation to streets, accessabilities, etc.. Also get shots of Riverview Park. Perkins proposal is for a pyramid 95'x95', 16' high; thats 9025sq.ft. I don't know of an area there that will accomodate it without interferring with the batte reenactment. I'll be glad to help tommorrow. The Benj. S. Turner markeris in Old Live Oak Cemetary east of King St., I'll show you tommorrow. BA Charles, We have the Benjamin Sterling Turner(first black from Alabama elected to U.S. House of Rep.-during reconstruction) and war memorials, WW1, WW2, Korea,& Vietnam. All others are turn of the century I believe. I'll see what I can Find out about the war memorials tommorrow. BA

Pat ... What about the ??? that is sitting in the middle of the street at the St. James Hotel? When was that thing (?) placed?

To BA: My wife's great-great grandmother was American Indian. It sounds like the 95 by 95 pyramid proposed by the mayor will look very much like an Indian Burial Mound (I understand some are located near Selma) with a Confederate Monument on top. Not only is the Mayor's idea totally insane it borders on being sacrilegious. (sp?)
