Lisbon Promises to Fix Airport-Radar Glitch Reuters Saturday, February 24, 2001

LISBON Portugal's civil aviation authority said Friday that it was taking steps to remedy "anomalies" with the radar system at the Lisbon airport but assured the public that there was no risk to passengers or planes.

It issued a statement after the Publico newspaper published extracts of a letter from the Portuguese Air Traffic Controllers' Association protesting "constant and serious anomalies and failures" in the radar system.

The newspaper said the faults included radar screens that showed aircraft apparently turning right after being instructed to turn left. The aviation authority said it was taking "measures to correct the anomalies referred to in the letter."
