A long time ago someone told me that Poe used to sleep with his wife after she died, is this true?

Answers

I know Poe was a drunken Slob but he doesn't have sex with dead people he just lays by them :)

-- Anonymous, March 05, 2001

Um...yeah he did...

-- Anonymous, March 11, 2001

Knowing the sordid life that he lead, one would have to say yes to that.

-- Anonymous, March 21, 2001

i pesonally think a sick twisted man like him would

-- Anonymous, April 12, 2001

I don't think so. He was not sick or twisted. He led a very hard life, which influenced his works, which makes people think he's sick and twisted. As for him sleeping with his wife...come on. Do you believe everything you hear? I heard that McDonald's uses ground up rats to make their meat, but I don't believe it. Be careful what weirdos you talk to.

Actually it was Rufus Griswold who broke into his own wife's mausoleum for a nap. Griswold baldfacely passed on a lot of rumormongering about Poe to destroy his reputation in revenge for a scathingly bad book review. Dumbly, Poe made Griswold the executor of his estate and works. Poe often visited Virginia's grave in open grief, maybe at odd hours. Despite his desperate personal life, works and plans for the future(and future wife) went on until his sudden death.

Virginia Eliza Clemm Poe died on January 30, 1847 in Fordham, New York. She died from tuberculosis and was laid to rest in the Valentine family vault in the Dutch Reformed Church on February 2, 1847. Sounds like the Fox network may have gotten the idea from his tale "The Oblong Box". The idea is just silly nonsense as is much of the silliness about Poe. I received this from, jetis50@aol.com

And there are many others sources to back up jetis50@aol.com

-- Anonymous, April 30, 2001

yeah... i have heard stories about poe sleeping with his wife after her death, but not in the sexual way that it is insinuated.

-- Anonymous, May 01, 2001

Those who do not hve the slightest idea about Poe's life and work, better shut up.

I cant believe no gays have imed me yet!! I want some booty!

-- Anonymous, May 11, 2001

I think that this isn't true..thats all! And Jeff, your sick! JK JK

-- Anonymous, May 15, 2001

Ummm...Poe didn't exactly sleep with his dead wife in the sense that you all are putting it. Many nights he would be so upset about her death that he would go to her grave and sleep by her tombstone.

-- Anonymous, July 03, 2001

Wow... I came here seeking an answer to a complex question regarding Poe and have found this... With a few exceptions, you people really have no idea what and who you are talking about... You are not at all familiar with the writer but more so the writing... As a matter of fact, you are seemingly not at all aware of any writing... This is the product of the image created by the writing and has nothing to do with the writer's lived life... Poe was neither a freak nor a weirdo... In his writing he projected such character but his choice to target the macabre was as calculated as was his rendering of the Raven was mathematical... He was an alcoholic and an opium addict but both were extremely common in this period and class and if there was some influence that bred it, it was more the financial situation his profession yielded... Growing up, Poe was an athlete and did well at all ventures... As with most people he too had his woes and among them was the fact that every woman he ever loved died of TB... His adopted father, Mr. Allan disowned him due to his lack of faith in Poe's direction and his ongoing gambling problems... Money is the short answer and beyond those failures, Poe had no oddities to his behavior...

I would love to write endlessly on this matter but I simply cannot at this time... In the end, I guess the only moral to be found here is that you should be careful of what you write because if you are too good at it, people might come to believe you are your characters... On the other end of the spectrum however, lie most of you... Writing about something or someone you have no understanding of whatsoever and sounding like nitwits in the process... Poe can be summed up by the quote from Francis Bacon hung on the Poe Memorial Gate at West Point... There can be no exquisite beauty without some strangeness to the proportion". I think the answer to the question is then obvious... Edgar loved Virginia so deeply and so completely, his life essentially ended when hers did... His life beyond Virginia was simply no life at all and it took him mercifully soon thereafter...

-- Anonymous, July 20, 2001

That's a very nice answer, except that Poe was NOT an opium addict. There is no historical evidence to show that Poe was an addict.

-- Anonymous, July 20, 2001

No way! Allan woulnd't sleep with dead people! especially the ones he loved!!! you are weird if u think that. SiCK!

-- Anonymous, October 01, 2001

Knowing edger he most likely did. And jeff fuck off.

-- Anonymous, October 09, 2001

i know this guy that told me that this other guy told him that this other guy told some dude that he should tell some other guy to tell his mom to tell her brother to tell her son to tell his sister to tell all of you guys to shut the hell up.

-- Anonymous, October 19, 2001

Poe at times when lonely would go to Virginia's grave and sleep, and Virgina was burried almost right after death. So he wouldn't have, besides he was he wasn't like that, especially to a woman he loved. I think Poe needed some female in his life because his mother died when Poe was three years old too young yet for love. He felt he needed some love, then his foster mother came ( he wasn't attracted to her.), then it was Jane his friends mom,Elmira Royster, then Virgina Clemm cousin/wife, back to Elmira, then he died. I hope this is useful!!!!

Fancly, I Think That Most Of You Need Help, I'm Sorry My Friend, You Are Not Related To Edger Allan Poe, And If You Were, I Trully Dubt He Would Have Told You He Molested His Wifes Dead Body, Wich, Imposably Attainable, He Did Not, Here Are The Facts: Virginia Was BURRIED! So How Did He Sleep With Her? Digging Her Up Every Night? I Think Not, It Is Proven That He Went To Her Grave And FELL ASLEEP Crying For His Dear Wife, The Poem "Anibell Lee" Clearly States He Layts With Her, In Sense, He Lays On Her GRAVE Not Her Real Body... Perverts... See, Mister Poe Was Too Intelagent To...

Peace, Double D

Rufus Griswald made up all that shit about him. U ppl r old enough not to believe rumors. His whole rep is ruined by that damn Griswald who stabbed Poe in the back after he died. Get more info be4 runnin around and contributing to the lies.

-- Anonymous, November 04, 2001

Ooookay, that is just sick. I'm researching Edgar Allan Poe for a History project, and despite the things I've heard, Edgar wouldn't do that. Yes, some of his works are twisted, but they're also beatiful. The dude had a pretty messed up life, but give me a break! You people actually believe that crap? Some of you haven't read Annabel Lee, but you need to! He would *never* sexually molest his deceased wife!

"And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side Of my darling-my darling-my life adn bride, In the sepulchre there by the sea In her tomb by the sounding sea."

He went to her grave and slept, there yes. Grow up, guys, mkay?

i just wanted to add to this so i could so i did.

Poe was killed by the same people that got Martin Luther King, Jr. Malcom X, and JFK. Its all a conspiracy...

NAZIS NAZIS DID IT!!!

Obviously the writing is open to Interpretation, as all good writing is meant to be by actually good writers. The only reason anyone would want to believe that he physically had sex with his dead wife is because it brings a scandalous objective into his life. Perhaps Poe wrote this line in a mannor that was broad enough to make all those ignorant to his emotions and thoughs believe what they will, in a News Rag, "bat boy born" red-neck UFO siting kind of way. Let's perchance compare him to marylin manson.. do you personally think Manson does any of that shit? no, it's hype to sell his records, he was born normal, led a fairly normal life and sells fantasy to his sheeply fans. Edgar Allan Poe hated mankind, he was rapped in his own torment, expelled in disturbing images, he wasn't jeffrey daumer (which i find ironic, in context to that fruitloop named jeff wanting gay dead sex). I could write imagery with much more vulgar and distrubing imagery, but that's all it would be I could tell you how one night i went up into my mothers room, tied her done to the bed and slit a hole in the side of her neck and stuck my genitals in and used the blood as lubrication and then i disembled her with a butcher knife, and feasted on her intestines, still full of digesting excriment.. well gee golly gosh! that's a heck of a little fairy tale isn't it words on a page.. idiots do you think Thomas Gray sat in his country churchyard, writing the famous elegy as he had sex with bodies? do you think maybe he was having sex with milton's corpse as he was writing about it? No i'll exclude those of you who are completely ignorant to anything, you don't even count has humans, but the rest of you, excluding a minority of individuals are stupid as the day is long. further more, this is not Entertainment Tonight, does it really fucking matter how, or who he did what with, he was a writer, read him, study him, learn him, love him or hate him, just fucking forget about speculations, there's always gonna be some dipshit telling you something. oh, and If you want more of me... go to www.geocities.com/the_official_bastard

EDGAR ALLEN POE WAS A GREAT POET AND I DON'T BELIEVE HE WOULD SLEEP WITH HIS DEAD WIFE!!!!!!!!!!! HE REALLY LOVED HER!!!

-- Anonymous, March 21, 2002

oh god, all of you shut up. ( Well, most of you, -some- out there - had- a brain) Get over it. Poe was a great writer, a weird one, yes. i write stories like his all the time. I'm normal. For a writer anyway. In only write stories that will grab attention, which is probably what he did will the most disturbing, he was a hurt person also. He was lonely, everyone he loved died. So don't judge him by the stories you read, by his stories, or rumors.

-- Anonymous, April 05, 2002

No he did not sleep with virgina i did some research and he did not sleep with his wife after she died actually if you wanna get serious she died in her sleep thats where everyone got allan slept with virgina.... so that case is solved.!!! Jeff are you really gay?

well i just wanna say that he was not sddictid to opium, actually, he felt bad for people who were, and his dad diddn't diss like him for being a drunk ( which he never enjoyed being called)he dissliked him for being a genius, cuz, mr. allen was a buisnessman, and those two types don't get along. i really think it's harsh for people to diss grace him by making awful alligations that he had sex w- virgina! please just let the poor man alone! and if you must pick on someone for there sexual habbits, why not his brother willum henry lenard poe? after all he was the womenizer! sorry to offend anyone, it was not my intention

-- Anonymous, January 23, 2003

I don't think so because that's sick

-- Anonymous, February 06, 2003

jeff fuck off damn homo

-- Anonymous, March 05, 2003

Edgar Allen poe was very twisted, in his writings! He was very intelligent, why do u think he was such an accomplished writer? He wrote twisted and scary stories and poems, but that does not mean that he was twisted also. If somebody wrote a story about a murderer, do you think they are a murderer too? No. He did not sleep with his wife. He loved her more than life itself. You people need to do some research, actually learn about him, and then post your opinions.

-- Anonymous, March 22, 2003

That sick M F must have. People say that Poes not sick in real life but just in his books. But if someone can do a book like he does then he must be fu**ed up in the head. Therefore he slep with his dead fu**'n wife!!!

-- Anonymous, April 21, 2003

i like cheese when cheese was invented i liked it soooooooo much that cheese was all i ever ate. but when cheese comes around goes around true, true! so POE had nothing to do with cheese so that is why we must kill him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

-- Anonymous, April 21, 2003

Edgar Allan poe was an artist not a necrophiliac, no he didn't. You should give the man credit. He wasn't sick he had a very different but creative mind, thank you.

-- Anonymous, April 27, 2003

Why don't you leave alone both Poe and Virgina. Let them rest in peace. If he did sleep with his dead wife, that's his business. I'm sure that some of you have done worse things. You should be more concentrate on his works than on his sexual life. You have one of yours, don't you, idiots!

-- Anonymous, July 10, 2003

love. i would.

-- Anonymous, July 29, 2003

It is unfortunate that people such as those that post here have the ability to spread rumors about Poe. Rather than limiting your research to a public message board maybe you should pick up a book and read away?

-- Anonymous, September 23, 2003

i think he did i mean he writes they really weird scary story i thought that poetry was suppose to be nice and loveing so why wouldent he sleep with he dead wife wich by the way is his coisin(gross) and antheir reason your are not suppose to marry your coisin its a law and most of all really really sick

i cant believe this topic has gotten so many replies. Well, yes Poe slept with his wife after she died. LITERALLY. He "literally" slept with her. That doesnt mean he had intercourse

-- Anonymous, October 01, 2003

Well for all the people out there spreding rumors i think you people need to pick up a book and read for once in your life if you can but allen wasent the kinda man to do that yes his poems were a bit off but that dosent mean hes sick and twisted like some of you people said .....but it dosent matter what thoes fucking idiots said i dont se why you would actoly belive them in the first place and if you did it seem as if youd do reserch on it first

-- Anonymous, October 18, 2003

I dont belive he did he may have been really weird but he loved her he wasint a pervert

-- Anonymous, October 25, 2003

Im sorry but you are sadly mistaken. Poe was one of the best writers of all time with almost lyerical poems. I crienge to think that people would make up stuff like sleeping with dead people and then pin the said topic on such a great writer. Yes he was a drug addict also an alcholic but that dosent mean that he is a sick and twisted pervert. It sad to think of what has happend to the public when they make up disgusting things and try to put it on a great writer.

-- Anonymous, October 25, 2003

I do not believe Mr. Poe would sleep with his wife. He was messed up a little, but aren't we all? His mom died when he was 2 and his dad disappeared, his grandma died, his foster parents died, his foster dad hated him, and his brother died of TB. He had an unlucky life, yes, but why would he screw his dead cousin?!?

-- Anonymous, November 05, 2003

Well Me honestly I dont think he did. Yea he was a friggen slob who drank to much but he was a great artist and even if his poems were weird and twisted I LIKED THEM!no wait

-- Anonymous, November 13, 2003

Well Me honestly I dont think he did. Yea he was a friggen slob who drank to much but he was a great artist and even if his poems were weird and twisted I LIKED THEM!no wait I LOVE THEM! and he really loved Virginia...with all his heart so...I say no..he didn't

-- Anonymous, November 13, 2003

The answer is yes he did. There is historical evidence that he did sleep with his wife after she died. I don't know why and I don't know exactly when, but in my phych class I was told that it is true that he did.

-- Anonymous, November 26, 2003

ok, just for all of you who think edgar allen poe was a perv: (anibell lee)

It was many and many a year ago, In a kingdom by the sea, That a maiden there lived whom you may know By the name of Annabel Lee; And this maiden she lived with no other thought Than to love and be loved by me.

I was a child and she was a child, In this kingdom by the sea; But we loved with a love that was more than love- I and my Annabel Lee; With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven Coveted her and me.

And this was the reason that, long ago, In this kingdom by the sea, A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling My beautiful Annabel Lee; So that her highborn kinsman came And bore her away from me, To shut her up in a sepulchre In this kingdom by the sea.

The angels, not half so happy in heaven, Went envying her and me- Yes!- that was the reason (as all men know, In this kingdom by the sea) That the wind came out of the cloud by night, Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.

But our love it was stronger by far than the love Of those who were older than we- Of many far wiser than we- And neither the angels in heaven above, Nor the demons down under the sea, Can ever dissever my soul from the soul Of the beautiful Annabel Lee.

For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams Of the beautiful Annabel Lee; And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyes Of the beautiful Annabel Lee; And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side Of my darling- my darling- my life and my bride, In the sepulchre there by the sea, In her tomb by the sounding sea.

-The End-

ok, now do you really think this mourning husband who obviously loved virginia very much would knock-up her dead corpse? i would think not! he slept BY HER GRAVE, not WITH HER you perverts! i mean, she was burried! he didn't keep her rotting cadaver in his bedroom so he could molest her every night! you people who think that

-- Anonymous, December 04, 2003

you know what? i think im going to change my mind. as a matter of fact, it IS VERY possibale that poe slept with virginia. do you people actually know what a sepulchre is? yup, he banged that broad.

I do not think that poe slept with his dead wife,he loved her very much, but thats going a little too far, people need to lay off him!he was a great poet and a wonderful person,he just had a bad life and people made him out to be something he is not!

-- Anonymous, January 22, 2004

I don't think it is true, it's kinda too weird even for Poe. All the people saying "He was an artist, he would never do ANYTHING like that!" Think about Micheal Jackson! He was a "great artist" until some people said he molested children. Just because you're an artist doesn't mean you can't do really weird strange things.

-- Anonymous, February 04, 2004

Hell yeah BOOOIIIIYYYY!!!!! He dug her up and said... "C'mon Motherf**cker , put your boots on....." , then he proceeded to lay some pipe in her cold dead corpse.....

-- Anonymous, March 01, 2004

I think Edgar Allen Poe did sleep with Virginia after she died. After all, he was pretty crazy. And he was very upset after her death, so I think it is very likely.

And, hey, that person who's answer is on top of my answer, you're sick!

-- Anonymous, March 15, 2004

Yes he did becuz he is sick and twisted and loved dead ppl

Do i think poe had sex with his wife after her death? NO but i am sure stephen king will have crap written about him as well long after he is gone.I do how ever think that this site has since gone onto be a site for either the true poe fans or dumbass kids who can't even spell. Kids who clearly are younger and quit possibly less intelligent than the price tags placed upon used poe books. Learn to spell or go to hell the choice is yours.

He didn't sleep with her when she was alive. Crazy, 10 years of marriage and she dies a virgin. Maybe, he regreted it, but a man that wanted to cherish innocence, true love. Maybe he did defile the body after the spirit left. whos ya daddy?

-- Anonymous, October 31, 2004

I don't think he did. He loved her and wouldn't do that to her.I also think some of you are sick.

-- Anonymous, November 18, 2004

Only one person here is right. Virginia died a virgin so Poe actually never slept with her at all. There was a great love between them but it was purely platonic. S.S.
