useful farm vehicle

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Many pioneer farmers in NZ built a vehicle called a 'kanake', I expect some folks have seen something similar but for the others...

If you live on a hilly property and especially if you use a horse for your general chores this could be just what you need. Build a simple load carrying sledge but raise the rear just slightly and fit a pair of available wheels. You can carry good loads and when going uphill the pull tends to take the load of the sledge runners and going down the reverse happens. 'Easy going up, harder going down', and when the horse stops so does the load you dont need to use a brake or chock the wheels.

COOOOOLLLL!!!!!! I never in a million years would have thought of that... and it looks like I'm gonna need it!! Any way to get a pic for it? I'd love to see it finished... hubby's not so good with written instructions... but he can reproduce anything he gets a good look at!!

Thanks!!!

I am sorry Sue I doubt that I could even find one to photograph but the design is really simple. The details of course depend on how big you need, a small one for horse or a bigger one for use with a tractor? I wouldn't recommend one for personal use as a wheel barrow would be better. The general design is to build a sledge of the required size and attach two suitable wheels at the back of the sledge. So how big do you have in mind?
