tmax in edwal's ultra black

greenspun.com : LUSENET : B&W Photo - Film & Processing : One Thread

several months ago there was a post about processing one of the tmax films, either 100 or 400, in edwal's ultra black paper developer. i can't seem to find this post in the archives. can anyone remember development times, temperatures, etc, for this combination?

best, brad daly

Ultra black is a paper developer.

Sorry Brad- miss read your post. I have no idea of the times and temps of this process. Can tell you that Ultra Black is a high energy, hydroquinone developer for paper designed to increased contrast.

right, jim. ultra black is my favorite developer. i use it almost exclusively in my darkroom. i know someone developed a technique for using it to process film--i think i remember this individual saying that helmut newton uses it for his film--but i can't remember or find the details anywhere on the web. there's also a technique for using dektol to process film for really coarse grain.

I read the same post, and wrote down the info. 1:9 @ 68deg, 2 min continous agitation. Normal fix & stop. The guy is Evan Grant, you can see examples at www.image-in.com The effect looks cool, but they look like nice shots regardless. Dave O'Connor

I tried it with T-Max 400. The film was shot at ISO 200 for a contrasty subject. The Ultra Black was diluted 1:25. I tube processed for three minutes at 75 degrees. The negative came out very contrasty. I haven't printed it yet, but it looks about Grade 1 or 1 1/2 paper would work best.

Next time, I'm going to 1:50 and maybe 4 minutes.
