Denton, Texas -- 5 blocks from a 7-11 and a few miles from TWU with their multistoried dorms...am hoping like heck they empty them out for the holidays and don't let anyone back in till after the rollover. Got a BIG yard...neighbors we've known for years and some my husband has known since he was ten. My next door neighbor has been prepared since the cuban missle crisis...old army...they have always stored food, water, alternate heat sources with fuel, and ammo.... but I don't know about the rest. Got some blank stares that I'm sure probably didn't turn into any real comprehension.
I do know there are some churches in the city who are preparing and teaching there parishioners to prepare. There is also a big Mormon community here.
If the two universities empty out Denton will revert to small town USA...which will be helpful...but we are still much to close to the Dallas/Ft.Worth metroplex (about 35 miles).

I thinks that I might possilby have emerged from a toilet sometime in 1992. Someone was sitting on it as I recall and it was all dark. So I yelled at him for him to get his fat ass outta my sun!!!! And he leaps up and yells, "hey someone's in my toilet!" And I yells back "damn right there's someone's in your toilet, there's ME in your toilet and are you going to give me a hand getting out?"
and he goes, "no I dont know what you are but I think I'm gonna flush you back to where you came from", and I say "no I don't want to go back to the sewers" and he lunges for the flusher but I jump out and stick his head in the toilet for a few minutes to teach him some manners about what you SHOULD do when someone comes out of your toilet and asks for some help.
anyway that is where I came from. I think. I might have come from a bagel factory instead but I'm not sure about that since I dont like eating bagels and I have no idea what could I have been doing in that bagel factory.

The Eastside (east of Seattle), where Puget Sound Energy produces only 32 percent of its own power. Fortunately, it typically doesn't get too cold in January. Abundant water available, especially if you've got the Katadyn or Berkefeld. On the down side, it's only 1.5 miles to the 7-11. Upper Midwest USA .. Minnesota-Wisconsin area .. near Lake Superior .. where the northern lights are visible on a regular basis, the air is clean, and it's incredibly serene. Almost 20 miles from any town, out in the woods, so no specific location is available. No 7-11 stores, Kentucky Fried Chicken, or McDonalds in any direction for many miles.
Home is totally solar powered. Equipped with wood and solar heat, an excellent well, and substantial propane (just in case) .. and more. Have a solar oven that's been in use here for 12 years. Also have a variety of shortwave gear.
1/2 acre organic garden. Planning to do a LOT of canning this summer.
Been in the computer industry for 23 years.
Not worried about water, heat, or power. Have plenty of all three. Shortage concern here: companionship. Any Y2K-savvy woman interested in sharing?

Tons and tons of college students with SUVs bought for them by Mummy and Daddy, all of whom will label themselves as either "pre-law," "pre-med," or "pre business." Haunted by lots of interesting ghosts like Thomas Jefferson, William Faulkner, Edgar Allen Poe. (I wonder what Mr. TJ would say about the mess we're in now?) We live in the Catskills. Nearest big town (2,000): 5 miles. Nearest metropolis (15,000): 20 miles. NYC: 175 miles. Phil: 220 miles. Nearest cow: anywhere you go, about 500 feet. Our region's historic claim to fame is "The Rent Wars". You see, despite that little thang called the American Revolution, leftover Tories owned all the land up here (100s of square miles) and rented it to local farmers with exorbitant and nasty arrangements.
Around 1840, the locals began dressing up like Indians (with costumes made by their wives, for disguises) and conducted non-violent but frightening raids on the local landowners.
By 1845, they owned their own land.
Many of their descendants still live here and they feel about the same way as they did in 1840 about much of what is happening these days .....

Have been preparing seriously for over 1 year now, 2 gardens, root cellar, solar, diesel generator, food storage, chickens, milk cow, horse, and two big dogs. We are in our 50's, have a business in a nearby town, which we hope will survive, and would like to correspond with others about what they are doing. Perhaps we could learn from each other.

I'm from Ashtabula (ASH-TUH-BYOO-LUH: Indian for "River of many fish") in the far N.E. corner of Ohio. My house is within 2 miles of several chemical plants, specifically PRAXAIR, formely Union Carbide-Linde Gas, makers of liquid industrial gases, like hydrogen & oxygen, and some inert gases.
The place is mostly controlled and operated via computers from somewhere out of state. (PA i think) Skeleton crew only. Wish I could head for the hills!!!!

I'm in Canberra, the federal capital of Australia. That makes 3 Aussies now I think, 1 in Japan, 1 Icelander, and 1 Brit (I assume the reference to cider apples implies Somerset England, rather than some other Somerset). All the rest seem to be US.
Well, Australia's meant to be at the forefront of Y2K remediation, maybe we're at the forefront of awareness too.

Well, mate, I can't accept on behalf of Lois, but your apology just mooted the flaming post I was about to send your way. And we have more in common with Aussies in many ways (taxes, gun laws, health provisions) than we do with Yanks (apologies to all those S of MD line). Personally, I feel vague ties to both countries; my aunt is a US citizen, as was my grandfather (her father), and my other grandfather emigrated to Oz in the 1950's when he thought that Canada was going to get caught in the middle of a war between the US and the USSR. However, I remain proudly Canadian. [Imagine red and white maple leaf flag waving - still can't do that picture thing *sigh*]

Are we really at the forefront of remediation? From what I've been hearing... Well, scratch what I've been hearing. My computer guy (Landmark computers in Lane Cove, Sydney..they're good enough to deserve a plug!) was telling me about his cousin. The guy works in the Sydney Qantas (that's our national airline, to all others) headquarters and he's been saying BAD things about the remediation status there.
My computer man is the only guy I know personally who GIs.

I live in Marysville, Washington planning on bugging out to Eastern Washington (near Canadian border) to my sisters, if I can find it. So far out the only time I visited her I got lost trying to find my way home. Lots of coyotes though, need to carry gun when horseback riding for protection. Will be applying for concealed weapons permit, buying handgun. Flock of Wild turkeys lives on her property. Sister bought some sheep, spinning wheel, learning to spin yarn. My sister always was a throwback to 1800s, so very glad. Hot in the summer, cold in the winter, very picturesque.

the 'Big Scrub" country of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings who wrote THE YEARLING. Located in Ocala National Forest in north central Florida. Moved here 3 years ago from the Cascade Mtns of Washington State. Prior to that the base of the "chain" in Alaska. I love the sunshine here.
