when did you become a christian and how are you keeping Christ alive in your heart?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : A.M.E. Today Discussion : One Thread

Jesus came into my life when I was sixteen, I did not believe in Christ at that time for I was with the nation of islam and a high school drop out. As I have gotten older my love for him has gotten stronger. I did not get baptized until I was 25. Now at 49 I can only think of Jesus! He has all of me. When did you become a christian. And has your relationship with him changed over the years? Joy in Christ!!

I was baptist when I was about 12 years old. I remember because it was a revival. One of the women at church (God has called her home) use to pick me up because I was the only one in my house that wanted to go to church. She said to me on the way that I should give my life to Jesue. So I went and I did. Today I know that I didn't join Church from being called by the spirit. About 15 years ago, I desired to be baptised again. Because I felt I was drawn by the spirit. My life has never been the same. What is really strange is the different phases of your spiritual growth. Right now I'm in a place where God's spotlight, so to speak shines on me in a way showing me areas in my life that I thought were okay. But instead of becoming rebellious at these findings, I am humbling myself before Him. God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. So I thank him for showing me these areas of my life and know I will be victorious.

I was baptized on August 25, 1966 at the age of 6. When I was a child, I remember seeing and hearing everywhere that " Ye must be born again or Repent and be saved". It was preached about in the churches. It was heard on the radio and television. You saw it on billboards along the highway. Although, my mother is a christian, she never pressured us to get saved. She did tell us to go to Sunday School and church every Sunday. My father is a baptist but never went to church until it was time for someone's funeral. Once, we visited a church in a surrounding city. So, based on what I learned in Sunday school about Jesus, I decided that I wanted to get saved. Now, my paternal grandmother told me that I was too young and that I may go to hell for accepting Jesus at such a young age. She is also a christian too. However, at age 6 , I did not believe her and considered myself a christian. After college, I joined the U.S. Navy. One Saturday night when I was walking around Time Square in New York City, I heard a woman preacher who was standing on top of a car with a microphone and speaker just a preaching in the middle of all the hustle and bustle of the city. I ignored her but one of her followers gave me a little booklet explaining God's plan of salvation, I read it and noticed that it was marked Jimmy Swaggert's ministries. The booklet was basically what I had been taught as a child but for some reason now I was able to articulate to anyone about how to receive salvation. Although, I believed, I was saved at age 6. It was at age 22 that I got a clear understanding about salvation. Shortly, after that experience, we returned to sea and I got depressed so to keep from going crazy, I decided to read my bible from Genesis 1:1 to Revelation 22:21. You know it is a shame that here I was a college graduate who considered himself educated but yet I had never read my bible. Although, I am not a theologian, I discovered that Jesus appeared many times in the Old Testament before appearing in the New Testament. I also discovered that everything, everybody, and everyplace belongs to God and that He made it for his glory. He made us to be eventually conformed to the image of his son Jesus by the testing of our faith through trials and tribulations. You see, I used to think because of all the moaning and groaning by various aunts that life was supposed to be hard. However, the bible teaches that there are specific reasons for our tribulations. As a matter of fact, God really doesn't want to punish us; he wants to do glorius things in our lives but many times we are disobedient to his commands. I also learned that when Jesus saved me; he saved me for ever and if I live by his commandments he will bless me. I have also learned that God loves the unsaved as much as the saved. I learned that the books of the Old Testament tell a progressive story of the coming of Jesus in the New Testament. From reading the book of Levicticus(the most difficult book in the Bible), I gained more of an appreciation of how much God hates sin and how it is the enemy's power to destroy man. Since, my 41st birthday, I have come to understand that God is the master and no one can do anything better than Him. He also has a place for me in his master plan. If I find out what he wants me to do in his master plan by submitting my free will to His Holy Spirit daily, I will have success and meaning in my life.

What a wonderful testimony. It seems like the more we mature we find out that we serve God because of love, and not to keep out of hell.

When we discover how much God indeed loves us and his desire for our lives we are on our way to living an abundant life. God gave me a thought a couple of years ago. "Don't get so caught up in the destintion, that you forget to enjoy the journey.

The promises God made for this life is wonderful. If we miss them it will be such a pity. I'd like to share a story I heard.

"A man had a dream he went to heaven. As he looked around he saw all of the barns (at least he thought). So he asked what they were. The answer was those are storage houses filled with blessings people didn't want to received."

To many that was awesome. Today I want all the blessings God has in store for me. Truly I want heaven to be my home, but I'd like to not only be welcomed in heaven, but stand firm and thank God for the privelege of life.

I was saved when I was 21. I grew up in church but loved the world too much. After becoming a problem drinker I knew I was going to hell unless I did what I knew from child hood was right. When I was 23 I was filled with the Holy Spirit. I keep fired up by lots of Bible reading and praying in the morning and evening. I like to pray for the lost and persecuted the most. If I do not know what to pray I pray in tongues by the Holy Spirit and make sure I listen to God too. To keep the devil from lying to me I always test the spirits.

I was giving birth to my second child when the lord spoke to me. It seemed as though. I had heard this same plea a thousand times only this time for some reason I heard it with my heart not my head. I was terrified I had complications with my delivery and I wasn't sure at that time if my baby was going to be okay. The strange thing is not 3 months before my husband who had attended church as a boy had barely spoke of church since our marriage. Sat up in bed one morning and decided we were going to church that Sunday and had been going ever since. I thought it was a positive change in our lives at the time but did not really beleive in my heart it was a permanant thing. It is funny that was 3 years ago and we have been attending Florida Station Church of God ever since and I could not see my life going down any other road than the one that God has paved for me and my family. Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior that doesn't make life easier you still have to work as hard at things as you did before but it does make life, better and filled with love and a humblness only God can provide.

Beautiful testimony.

Truly "Life can be beautfiful if you live for Him."

It's an old song, but the words are so true.

"He makes the sun to shine He gives me peace of mind Keeps me from harm He gives me all I need My hungry soul he feeds Life can be beautiful if you live for him"
