Domain names? (ie boring question)greenspun.com : LUSENET : Gwen's Trailer Trash Forum : One Thread |
What's the best way to register a domain name? I went to register.com and it was 35 bucks for 1 year of the domain I want. Is there any cheaper way to do this? Or should I just bite the bullet?

last night i was surfing (not like that, James) looking for info on free web hosting (i want to start a page) and about.com had a lot of pretty useful information (like lists comparing features). I noticed they had some stuff on domain names, but since that's not what i was looking for, i didn't pay much attention. You might start there, anyway. The page I liked was this: About: personal web site

Thanks, Deirdre. I'll check it out. What I don't understand is why it costs money in the first place. I mean, nobody owns the Internet, so how can this company charge ME for something I came up with? Huh? Huh? *realized how naive I just sounded* never mind :-(

Actually, it's a popular misconception that nobody owns the internet. I know the guy who owns the internet, and he has the papers to prove it. I've seen them.

I own the internet.Just kidding.
The best way to register a domain name is to go to www.networksolutions.com -- as I've been made to understand it, they are the Head Honchos, as it were, of domain names. It's $35 a year, yes, but at network solutions you CAN get a discount if you go ahead and register for several years at once. Also, right now .org and .net names are on "sale" and are $25 and $30, respectively. So if you don't need a .com, that might help.
...realizing that I really am officially a geek now. I just bought my SO a domain name for his birthday. Help.

No, no! I own it. I have my deed right here next to the one for the Brooklyn Bridge and the Queen Mary. (smiles)

Everyone stand back from your monitors because we need to blow out the internet lines...they get so clogged. :P

That's what happens when you have too many 1s and not enough 0s. :-)
