Can someone explain exactly how a float bed works and does anyone have a set of plans for one? Thanks!

Never heard of one, only things we could think of where a floating bed on a semi-truck, or the 'stick used to level concrete'?

I have plans for a float bed, sent to me by someone who was hounded off this forum by the nasties. She gave it to me for free, so if you e-mail me your physical address (or a relatives, I don't care who, just so I can get it to you), I will send you a xeroxed copy.

Again - what is a float bed? Sandy

Float beds are a kind of raised gardening bed, with provision for a mini-growth tunnel over it for a low price. It was apparently developed for the tobacco farmers to start their plants in, but is also used for starting vegetable transplants in polystyrene trays on a bed of water (hence, 'float'). It is built of 2x8 or 2x10 lumber, and lined with 4 or 6 mil plastic. The beds are filled with a soil- less mix and you have to add fertilizer to it.

It is my intention to experiment with this as a cheap alternative to Earthboxes and use the greenhouse covering to extend the growing season. I also plan to try using organic fertilizers with it.

Sharon: If you are lurking just wanted you to know that I really miss you and I still have bean seed for you if you would like some. Love - diane

I can get plans and photos of float beds ... also get answer to questions if you have specific questions. I don't know a THING about tobacco raising ... which is what the float beds were developed for ... but I do have lots of neighbors that raise tobacco and have float beds so I can get the answers if you know the questions for me to ask!

Just to let everyone know what is going on. My wife Sharon did not post on this thread and since I'm married to her I should know. This looks more like the work of your resident nasty. I won't let her post here due to all the computer games the low lifes just have to indulge in. I suggest they get a life.

Joel is this you again? Are you dressed in drag for the womans part?

Clarification note: The Sharon Diane referred to is not the Sharon in KY who also posted against this thread. Both do live in KY. This is going to happen more frequently as the forum grows. I recommend adding extensions, such as Sharon in NE KY, Sharon X in KY or something. We have something like five Cindys posting.

Nick -- I really miss both your and Sharon's postings. I'm glad you're both still out there in the electronic void. Thanks so much for sending the float bed plans -- you were kind enough to send them to me for free, so I will continue to do so for other people still braving the waters of the forum.
