Looks like a rainy week here, maybe even a few snowflakes, Patty, did you send those here? Got first planting of 3 kinds of onions and potatoes in, as well as enough peas-3 kinds-to feed this whole part of the state, radishes and 2 kinds of lettuce. Three of my grandkids were here and helped. They're city kids and public schooled, you can tell sure tell it. Grandmas can hope.... Have a good week and God bless.

I just LOVE the barter system.

Borrowed my neighbor's haflinger horse and come-along for a truck load of scrap fire wood for his hot water heater. Rotated the chicken coop with the truck until the tires skidded in the mud and finshed the job with the haflinger and come-along.

Traded 3 rabbits trapped in my wife's garden and a snickers candy bar for ten-year-old boy muscles to roll a decorative rock nearer our front sign post.

No money changed hands, but my neighbor got his heater wood, neighborhood boys got new rabbits, my chickens got a new view from the coop, my wife got her big rock moved and I got my snickers.

Life is GOOD!

It sure is a lot more fun playing chess with my 5 year old grandson than playing it with my husband. It's a lot more creative.

We cut/loaded/unloaded a couple of truckloads of wood today. It hailed on us for a while, but that only made it seem more like April! Our spinach and peas are up, plus rhubarb is almost ready to cut. I have two bales of hay left, so I feel good about estimating our needs for this winter. I may have to add a few more, but three ton seems to have been just about right.

The chickens are laying about a dozen eggs a day. I planted four trees and some flowers, and I am thinking about white board fencing (with our neighbors on the common boundary line....they already have theirs around most of their perimeter.) Haven't seen the eagle back. No real bad news on the front page of today's paper, for a change.

I agree with Craig, life is good!

My peas and lettuce are still in hiding. I imagine the snow Sunday and the hard frost Monday would be pretty grim to face. I wonder if I promise them better weather is a' comin'...?

I would like to make some Parmesian cheese with my new neighbor. Does anyone have a good recipe for that?

-- Lori in SE Ohio (klnprice@yahoo.com), April 02, 2001.

On the way back from the barn after evening chores, I noticed that the asparagus is peeking out just a little. My mouth is already watering.

It's been raining, really a heavy mist, and it smells like spring rain with the good smell of earth reawakening. Not a minute too soon, either.

What a lovely day here in NY!! Upper 40's today, sunny, blue skies. I started tomato and pepper seeds today, now it really feels like spring! I'm planning on being rather conservative with the garden, I just don't have the time to plant tons this year. I had a phone call from Gail (Missouri Ozarks), unfortunately I was asleep and he left a message on the machine. He says he just got out of the hospital but he's doing well. He didn't say why he was in the hospital!?!?, so I sent a letter out this morning, asking for details. I'll let you know what's up as soon as I hear anything. Everyone have a great week.

What a pleasant surprise we just received! The nicest family that lives down the road from us called yesterday and offered to give us their rabbits. We were so excited and are so greatful - went to pick them up this morning. We already had cages we had bought from them last year and they had given us feeders and waterers they no longer needed but we never got rabbits then because we didn't want to get started with any rabbits until winter was over. They gave us a beautiful and healthy Red Flemish buck and Red Flemish doe that has six little ones a little over a week old and she has already been bred and will be having another litter in about 30 day. They also gave us three more that are almost ready to be butchered. What a nice family !! :-). We got all the rabbits settled in and they seem to be quite content. The snow has finally left us and we spent all day Saturday weeding (last year's that got away from us) and burning and just doing some general clean-up chores around the place. It was so enjoyable being out in warmer weather!

That's neat Terry! We have 3 litters of bunnies now, and about 8 more does should be having them soon. We have the large ones too.

I don't have chicks this spring, kinda got burned out on them. Only have 2 roosters right now. I am buying my eggs from a local farm friend.

My Border Collie,Baby, had 9 pups yesterday afternoon. 6 girls and 3 boys. Boy are they beautiful! I spent the majority of the day in the hall closet with her! I'll put some pics on the picture page later today. 6 black/white with full collars, 2 of those have half white face (possiblity of blue eye on white side), 2 black/white with no collars, and 1 white with black cap on her head (she came last)!

Also tomorrow, I have 2 more adult Borders comming, the person cannot keep them, and they are registered and very nice dogs. She wants me to keep the female, but I must find a placement for the male, he is white. The one I placed a couple weeks ago for someone is doing great, fitted in just fine and getting spoiled.

Spring is here, I have not had the outdoor woodstove even lit for several days now!!!!! Yipppppeeeeeee. Windows and doors were OPEN all night!! Can you see me smiling? Gotta go pick up a few puppys and smell them again!

Oh Patty, you are sooo cute! Now you got me giggling! I can just see you jabbering away there.

-- Cindy in Ky (solidrockranch@hotmail.com), April 06, 2001.

I always envy you who are farther south- at least this time of year. Our garden is still buried under 2 feet of snow. It's melting fast though and soon I will be tossing my onion seeds onto the snow like our neighbor used to do. Time to start the cold weather crops and I'm a little late doing it. The tomatoes will have to wait a while. I'm planning to set up a hoop house just for the tomatoes and peppers this year to extend the season a little. There were a couple dozen deer in the yard yesterday, plus our 4 ducks, a little black and white rabbit someone must have dumped off because we are so far out in the country, a few of our chickens, and 7 turkeys who wandered in from somewhere and now think they own the place. I tried to get a picture to post but as soon as I cracked the patio door the turkeys came running to see what I was going to throw out to them. Ruined the effect!

It's a beautiful Saturday morning here! 8:00am and I have the doors and windows open. Supposed to be near 80 today. Husband and stepson are out patching a hole in the fence. I'm drinking my morning coffee, listening to the birds chirp and the cows mooing. I feel lucky to be able to start my day off this way.

-- nobrabbit (conlane@prodigy.net), April 07, 2001.

Good Morning Nobrabbit!! Yes, we got all the doors and windows open too, and I mowed the yard yesterday afternoon. It smelled soooooo good. The grass was a foot tall in patches!

HEY YOU ALL!!!! My granddaughter Emily was born this morning at 4:30!! My son called and woke me up at 5:00. Both are OK, what a blessing. I'm going to let them both sleep today and will see her this evening. Emily has a brother, Aaron, who is 4. And I am only 44 years old, I feel like 34.

I am getting 7 new baby goats today, all registered Alpines, 1 more doe and 6 bucks to raise up till fall. If anyone around me needs a registered one, just email. They are beautiful, and from winning stock. Plus, those 2 Collies are comming this afternoon, oh my, busy day! I did put pics of the pups on the picture page. Goooooo seeeeee. Be good you guys and gals, and love to you all, really.

Wow is it windy here today. Gusts up to 60 mph. This was the day scheduled for garbage pickup (I belong to a group that has a stretch of highway to maintain), and it was so windy, we could hardly get our bags open to put garbage in them. Normally, we leave them alongside the road for the county to pick up, but today we didn't dare -- they would have gone sailing for sure. We had to take them to the county garage.

BUT, it was warm today for the first time this year. I wore a T- shirt, instead of a sweatshirt and heavy jacket. Three weeks ago I was wearing a winter coat still. We still have a few snowbank remnants, but mostly they're gone now. Still too cold and mushy to plant yet. Can't even work the soil, really.

Hey Cindy, Good to see that someone has somethng green coming up in their garden. Mine still has a patchy 6" or so of snow on it!! But life is good....my first doe (goat) gave birth on Thursday (two perfect does). My second just kidded about an hour ago (1 buck & 1 doe). Textbook delivery from a first timer!!! Now I'm wearing my annual shade of "iodine" on my hands and jeans! Two to go, and the funs over...just the twice daily milking. But I really do enjoy that, also!!!

-- Marcia (HrMr@webtv.net), April 07, 2001.

Was a beautiful morning here today,, a friend of mine and I went out and visited some folks and had a nice time. This evening it clouded up and is now raining "beat the band". Forecasting snow now,,would you believe??!!!!Anyway, not a boring moment...the bright side is that I don't have to "think" about Spring cleaning since winter is coming back....Take care...

-- Patsy, MT (cozyhollow-gal@care2.com), April 08, 2001.

Cindy, it is so exciting about your new puppies. I know you must be very excited and happy. I look forward to seeing some pics of them.***I used to raise Shelties when I lived in WV. I want to get back into Shelties soon as I get more "room". (I live on a small place now,,small town). However, I do raise poodles and am expecting to get a litter in June. I am excited already,:-),,I do my own grooming and love giving the pups their first puppy clip. And enjoy their special puppy smell. Sooooo cute!!!Wish you the best with your new litter...Take care
