what was The 'Fol de rol' in San Fransisco Opera?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : San Francisco History : One Thread

I am looking for information on an event named 'Fol de rol' which took place annually (or every few years) in the San Fransisco Opera. What I would most like to know is what kind of event it was, who was in charge of it, and what is the origin of the quaint name.

Thanks!

Ronen

Etymology: fol-de-rol, a nonsense refrain in songs Date: 1820

When I lived in SF in the mid 1980's the Fol de rol was a gala type event held at the Civic Auditorium. It featured star turns by the singers appearing in the fall season and ensembles by artists including the Adler Fellows. As I recall, the one I saw on Nov 11, 1982 was set on a boxing ring with tables on the floor around the event. General seating all around in the gallery chairs. It was sponsored by the SF Opera and the SF Opera Guild. Hope that helps some.

Cheers.
