Anyone grown potatoes in compost nests?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Beyond the Sidewalks : One Thread

I've been reading up on growing potatoes in compost nests, which basically means planting in compost, then continuing to cover up the vines as they grow taller, thus forcing potatoes to grow all along the length. I've also heard that you grow them inside of either a very (think 18" -2') round pin, or old large trash containers with the bottoms gone.

Anyone herd of this or tried anything like it? Would love to grow potatoes this year.

Hi Marty. A friend of mine planted potatoes in a straw-filled tire. As they grew, he added more tires and more straw. At harvest time, he had a huge number of potatoes - -BUT- - he had an even larger number of mice! They were living (and reproducing) in the sidewalls of the tires. I would think they would chew on the taters, too. I'd like to try this in tires with the sidewalls cut off and the stack held in place with 3 fenceposts. Sandy
