Downloading

I would like to be able to put an occasional file on my website (an activity or rubric or what have you) that visitors can download. Anyone know how to do that? I want the visitor to simply click on a hyperlink to download the file. Is there a simple, inexpensive way to do this? Michael Gatton

You can do a simple-minded download of a MS Word or Excel document by saving it in your file system and creating a hyperlink to it. Include the whole filename including the ".doc" or ".xls" extension. Tell your user to "Shift-click if you're using Netscape, right-click for IE."

On the pop-up menu in IE select "save target as"

On the pop-up menu in Netscape select "save to disk"

Then your user can just open it from Word or Excel.

I hope there is a way to just click the link and have it come up in Word, but I don't know how. Anyone?

Thanks Terry:

I used the method you described above and it fits my needs nicely with IE. When I download with Netscape, however, I can only save the document as a generic file (*.*) and then publisher won't open it. I do not have this problem with IE. Here's the test file that I posted to practicce on: Alien Genetics. Let me know if I'm missing something...

I just tried it with Netscape 4.76. I shift-clicked and just typed in the ".doc" extension. It saved as a Word file and I opened it with Word just fine.

Really, it's more fun with IE.

Hi! The PDF and Word Document work fine in Netscape 4.7 with a normal click on the link. This is what I use for my downloadable docs. Most people have a word processor that can read the Word documents and they can get Adobe Acrobat Reader but not as many have Publisher. I also add HTML documents that they can view in the browser and print from there.

Thanks, Bill
