Price of Beef

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I work with a gal who has a brother-in-law who works as a meat cutter in a major grocery store here in Wisconsin. He told her last night that the beef prices are going to raise 50% VERY soon because the "hoof and mouth has entered the US". Anyone else seeing or hearing this?

No, but the local chain grocery is now asking $15.99/pound for Angus sirloin steak, and $7.99/pound for the other grade of sirloin. That is already double the old price.

I was just looking at the price of feeder steers this morning in our lacal Ag weekly 300-500# $96-98, that price is up from $92 in the past 4 months. The last I bought was in August 1999 and I paid $72 then, a twenty cent a pound increase. Pork is up too in this part of the country.

Haven't heard anything from our local stores, but would not be surprised is prices do rise. Hubby and I were just talking about it a few nights ago. I fully expect poultry prices to go up as well. No industry is going to be left out when there are price hikes. Just last week I saw gas go from $1.55 to $1.75-$180/gal.

Expect everyone (retailers) to jump on the bandwagon.

Looks like it's time to put my No Red Meat plan into action. : ) I sure hope these veggies and chicks grow well!
