Question on Chicken Health.

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Freedom! self reliance : One Thread

Hello! Am wondering if anyone might be able to help with this. My laying hens (3rd season) have creamy whitish glumps of poop (sorry)hanging on their behinds. Not all of them, but enough to make me worried. They free range, have all the normal stuff available to them, (food, grit, ect.) fresh water, clean coop with lots of straw for bedding. I have begun to put vinegar in the water to see if this might help. Any ideas? I can't stand to see that stuff all over their behinds...looks very unhealthy. Thanks!

Sounds like it could be coccidiosis to me. You can get sulpomet, or sulfaquinoxylene from almost any feed store and that should clear it up. Good luck!

Me too.... Just had a baby bunny pass because of it. Separate them, but treat all of them. Older birds probably won't die from it, but young ones can.

Thanks for the info!! I will begin treating them with that, right away. I need to do a little research....wonder why they got it now? We have added adult Muscovy Ducks recently, wonder if that could have something to do with it?!?! Anyway, thanks bunches!!

Help!! Now my hens have funny looking eyes. Seem to be watering alot and a few have 1 eye closed shut. They look awful. They have only been on the medicine for one day...any ideas?? Thanks!

Probably infectious coryza. Mine had that and I think that's what it is. I used terramycin. A soluble powder. What are you using for the cocci? It could be that that will treat the eyes as well. Good luck with them!

I need to ask a couple questions. There only seems to be a place for answers. I have a sick hen. She appears to be at her worst. She cannot even hold up her head. Actually she can't even stand. Any Ideas? Also an unrelated chick seems to have a swollen shut eye and the other one is getting swollen.

Patti, Separate any sick birds from the healthy ones. Wash everything thoroughly and with bleach to kill any bacteria. Rinse well and put clean food and water out for everyone. Be sure litter is clean as well. You might try giving the sick birds a general antibiotic in their water. Provide plenty of good grain, grit and feed. Are the sick birds eating and drinking? Have you noticed anything wlse re: their behavior?

Hi

This isn't really an answer, more of a related question. I have a 3 yr old Maran who is very poorly. (She is one of only five hens we keep in the backgarden.) She is very wobbly on her legs, stands around on her own a lot and both her eyes are nearly closed. She still seems to be eating ok - especially enjoying her greens. The vet hasn't examined her but left me with some general antibiotic for her. She has been getting this way for just over a week. Does this sound like the coccidiosis mentioned in other postings? If I get some of the sulpomet that was mentioned (if I can get it in the UK) does it have any side effects? If I give this to her and it isn't coccidiosis, will it do any harm? Please help if anyone can.

First off, does she have foamy diarrhea? If not, then it isn't likely to be cocci. How is her comb color? Is she laying? How long has she been this way?

You may check her crop to make sure it isn't too overloaded. If the crop gets impacted from not enough grit, they can develop septicemia and that will take them down. I would seperate her from the other hens just in case it may be catching. You can give her some electrlyte replacer like "pedialyte" or honey, baking soda (a tic) and salt (a tic) mixed up in water to help her hydration.

Should you like to post a question on your own problem, you can click on the freedom self reliance link at the top and then there will be a link in the same area that says "ask a question" and it will go on the main board.

I hope your chicken recovers, and please update us!

Our pet chicken josefina is very sick. She doesn't move, can't stand or pick her head up. She is still breathing though. A farmer told me that an egg most likely broke inside her, and that she is dying. She is our precious baby, is there anything that we could do to help her? Any suggestions would be greatly apreciated.
