Cow Still Nursing

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

We have a hereford cow who is due in August but is still allowing her 8 month old calf to continue nursing. We are moving them both to another pasture in about 2 weeks. Have no place to put the calf except inside the barn. Would it be such a crime if we did not seperate them? If she doesn't stop nursing this one, will she have colostrum for the new calf? I know my dads' cows managed years ago but need your opinion on this. The calf isn't the friendliest so the device to put on her nose would be a REAL problem to attempt. Thanks for your help!!

Don't worry yet. As long as she is dry 4-6 weeks before calving she will make colostrum. Our beef cows almost aways wean their own in plenty of time for next calf. She will start kicking at him soon. Sounds like she is a good mother if he is 8 months old and still nursing. Nature will take its course in time. Hope this helps.
