Karen, I've always put a piece of bread in my brown sugar container, you'll need to change it as it dries out this helps to keep the moisture level in brown sugar high. Once it's rok hard I'm not sure maybe a few( 5-10 seconds in the microwave) might do just the trick, test it on a small amount first. Hope this helps :o)

P.S. the bread trick works with cookies too, just let the cookies throughly cool and put them in a container, add a piece of bread and they stay soft and chewy. :o)

I put it in the microwave. Length of time depends on how much you have.

Put a wedge of apple in with the sugar, in an airtight container.

They make a little disc that looks like a cookie out of terra cotta. You let it soak up some water, wipe it off, and put it into the container with the brown sugar. It releases moisture into the sugar as needed, just like bread or and apple slice, but is reusable. I don't see why you couldn't use a pottery shard.....

i have used bread in the past and bought one of those pottery things from a kid who was trying to raise money for some school project. both work equally as well but won't soften the brown sugar right away. takes a couple of days. i have put the liquid ingredients into a bowl with the brown sugar when i have run across this problem. good idea about a broken pottery shard....just make sure it's clean :-)
