greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Blossom was down yesterday and had just a little grain very little milk prodution a little over a gallon. Today no milk at all and a snaking of the neck , a cough like she is tring to bring something up no cud chewing, lethargy, and no eating that I have seen. Any suggestions? Does this sound like a possible operation in the making? Vet is thirty miles away.

She may have roughage stuck in her throat. One solution is to flush it out with running water from a garden hose. If you are brave enough to stick you arm in, you may pull some of it out if you can see it.

The solution, if this is the case, is that her back teeth may need to be filed down some, to smoothe them. I could never use a coarse rasp on the teeth of an animal, but this may be what needs to be done.

Once the blockage is removed, if that is the case, make sure she has plenty of access to water as she will be thirsty.

Thank you for your answers. I was really scared! I got a friend to drive us to the vet and he said it could be a twisted something. It's one of the stomachs He couldn't find anything in the throat but he did put a magnet in and gave her some meds. Said to let him know how she does or bring her back. Her calf was too far down so he couldn't reach it to see how it was. Again, thank you.

Sounds like what our Milk cow had last yr. We figure she had nitrogen poisoning, which happens when you geta really wet Spring and the clover gets huge. Her milk production went way down, she wasn't eating anything, not even drinking. My husband gave her mineral oil, then she got the runs bad. If we had known what she had at the time all we needed to do was to give her a shot of Calcium Magnesium. ANyway she fully recovered, and is raising two calves and providing our family with fresh milk.
