Will Eating Buckeyes Harm Dogs?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I want to plant a Buckeye tree in my backyard. My dogs will probably chew on the buckeyes. Will this harm them?

My husband say's they are poisonus and doesn't let the little kids play with them so I would think dogs would be the same as little kids. will your dog outgrow chewing before they mature?

I've always heard they were poisonous. I wouldn't take the chance.

Another vote for them being toxic. All the books list them as such and they are in the section on poisonous plants that will poison livestock in one of my horse books. Dogs have also been known to die from eating acorns (toxic rather than impaction).

Sell the dog, and enjoy the tree. This would be a lot cheaper in the long run, also would be a lot more earth frindly; not to mention quieter. I never have heard a tree "Bark" (pun intended).

Thanks to everyone for your imput. :-) It looks like I will be finding another location for the tree. You were all a big help in making this decision.

I was told on a nature walk that the natives crushed them and threw them in the water to stun fish so they could catch them easyer.
