Tio-Mila Coverage

greenspun.com : LUSENET : orienteer kansas : One Thread

I don't know who is officially taking charge of our Tio-Mila coverage, but suffice it to say, at least some coverage will occur right here on the OK Forum. Why not use this thread to start off our coverage tomorrow? Below are some leg distances and predicted changeover times from the Tio-Mila page. I for one don't intend to catch much of the Ungdomskavlen or Damkavlen live. The schedule is just too inconvenient for me. I will be thinking of Sanna, of course, leading off her relay team at 6:45am HDT tomorrow. The Tio-Mila starts at 1:45pm tomorrow. I'll try to be here.

12:46 HDT -- No webpages with on-line coverage seem to be appearing at the 10-Mila site. If anyone has any ideas, let us know!

-- Mook (everett@psi.edu), April 27, 2001.

1:51pm HDT --- Still no updates or results or any links to the kind at the 10-Mila website. I can't find anything on onewscosmos or alternativet either (not that I can understand much of any of these). Argh!

Is this year's 10-Mila going reaching for Hopelessly Hapless Standard?

-- Mook (everett@psi.edu), April 27, 2001.

Well, the leaders are presumably off and running the night leg right now, but unless you're actually on-site at the 10-Mila, you'd probably never guess it!

I guess the average Joe Schmuck who owns a barber shop in Peabody, Illinois just doesn't care.... pitiful if you ask me!

Well, to make up for lost coverage (not really), let's pretend that Spike's lineup for OK's 10-Mila team is in the race. How are we doing? Surely there are some other OKers out there who are as disgusted with this situation as I am. Care to comment? Why the silence?

-- Mook (everett@psi.edu), April 27, 2001.

A few minutes ago, Magnus just the hand-off from Spike. We're now about 8 minutes down on the lead pack and in a large group of 14 other teams. Spike ran a brilliant leg, pulling us back from the brink of disaster!

As you know, OK got off to a great start in the 10-Mila this year, with Sanna going head-to-head with all the "big name" teams and holding her own. There was a lot of press coverage and hype surrounding "La Surprise Team American". OK, along with IKHP1, Lekands, Malung, Baekelagets, and most of the other notables all came in together in the top 10 at the changeover. Things were looking quite good! A steady stream of other contending teams followed close behind.

Next Raymond took the torch for OK. He was looking quit fit this year despite the ravages of FMD in his native land. Raymond was getting the baton around quite well, and was in the lead as a small group of elite teams formed at the head of the line... then disaster struck! Raymond's headlamp (on loan from Snorkel) suddenly went out! Raymond was stumbling around in the dark, bumping into trees, trying to hold it together. He had a small emergency light in his hand, and that was all. He valiently struggled onwards, but inevitably came apon mistakes in the dark. He dropped back. OK dropped out of the top 10, out of the top 20, then we were 50th, 75th... finally Raymond struggled into the changeover zone in the dark to exchange with Spike and relate his sad tale to the rest of OK.

Spike was set! He took off at a torrid pace! Suddenly OK was pulling up through the pack. The radio announcers who had abandoned the OK cause once the headlamp disaster started, now rallied to our side, reporting OK's progress through the rest of the field! Everyone was asking "who is this Spike". Those in the know were quite smug with themselves. ... when Spike came in to exchange, he had pulled back an enormous 6.5 minutes on the leaders and we were now only 8 minutes back! Spike had the best time on the 3rd leg by far! Way to go Spike!

Now Magnus is in the woods running tough. Magnus (although he didn't know it at the time) has been training for this long night leg since he was 5 years old. It has all come down to this single opportunity... he's looking good at the moment, running well and pushing the pace hard.... stay tuned!

Oh, I suppose the 10-Mila is tomorrow. Nevermind. Look for stuff then.

-- Mook (everett@psi.edu), April 27, 2001.

Sat. 1:45 HDT --- the mens' 10-Mila has just started, more on that as it develops....

The women's race is over... some final results of note:

1st - Kalevan Rasti 1
2nd - Haldens SK1
3rd - IKHP 1 (2.5 minutes out of first, 3 seconds behind second place)
31st - IF Thor 1
33rd - IFK Lidingo 1
45th - IKHP 2
81st - IF Thor 2
95th - IKHP 3
112th - IF Thor 4

Sanna had a good run on the first leg, getting her team, IF Thor 4 off to a hot start, into 43rd place (2:29 down on the lead).

-- Mook (everett@psi.edu), April 28, 2001.

2:20 HDT --So far there are no results of the SMOC meet on the website where they are supposed to appear. Surely the first day is done now... I hope to we can get some coverage of the meet on the OK Forum.

-- Mook (everett@psi.edu), April 28, 2001.

2:32 HDT - Alternativet has an online text-based coverage of the 10-Mila, but apparently "Obs! Denna onlinebevakning sköts av besökare på Alternativet på frivillig basis och ej av Alternativet-medlemmar Välj bevakning:"

I have no idea what that means, but it doesn't sound good. I'll keep checking to see if something gets fixed.

Tiomila is underway. Here in Michigan, Swampfox is downloading a new version of the Realplayer. We hope to be able to follow the live on- line audio coverage soon.

While there was some disappointment with IKHP's failure to win (2nd is still quite good) -- we were thrilled to see Sanna's outstanding run.

The race here in Michigan went fine. Swampfox was in the lead when we left (78 minutes), I was second (82). Look for better runs from both of us tomorrow.

And now...on with the live Tiomila coverage!

-- Michael (mike_eglinski@kcmo.org), April 28, 2001.

The predicted time of the first exchange is now. No results posted yet after the 1st leg. What gives with the online coverage?

-- Mook (everett@psi.edu), April 28, 2001.

Doesn't look like anyone is particularly interested in a Yahoo Messenger chat from what I can tell. Is anybody out there? Anyone at all? This is not Lawrence, Kansas, but we're ready to chat just the same.

-- Mook (everett@psi.edu), April 28, 2001.

Mook, we are here--Swampfox, Mary, and Spike--in Michigan. Have you got 10-Mila sound yet? There's something wrong with the link Alternativet has posted and we can't connect in. We haven't seen any text from the Mens race either, but text from the womens race was there.

Now I'm going to download Messenger and then we can try to get in contact!

-- Swampfox (wmikell@earthlinbk.net), April 28, 2001.

I don't have RealPlayer, so haven't bothered. I also assumed that the coverage would be in Swedish anyway, which isn't so useful to a Mook.

Yahoo has a java messenger that might be easy to get up and running.

I am still waiting for text results as well. Have you tried to get into alternativet's coverage?

-- Mook (everett@psi.edu), April 28, 2001.

Spike here...it looks like Hestra came took the lead after one leg. But, the race is quite tight with 80 teams within 2 minutes. Lidingo's Casper Giding is tearing through the dark forest right now. Look for him to have a good race. Let's hope the problems with the coverage get fixed so we can get a better idea of what is going on.

-- Swampfox (wmikell@earthlinbk.net), April 28, 2001.

The third leg of Tio-Mila is underway now, though not many teams have changed over yet. IKHP is 5th at the moment.

-- Swampfox (wmikell@earthlinbk.net), April 28, 2001.

The 3rd leg is well underway now and we're getting radio reports from the forest, but I'm not yet sure where the radio is, nor have we seen/heard a complete rundown of the leaders. But soon, we hope!

-- Swampfox (wmikell@earthlinbk.net), April 28, 2001.

Only now have I managed to find Magnus' name! I guess IF Thor 2 changed their running order and Magnus went out on their 2nd leg.

He didn't have a great run apparently, losing some places for his team, finishing 14 minutes behind the lead. After 2 legs IF Thor 2 stood in 166th.

-- Mook (everett@psi.edu), April 29, 2001.

Hello Everyone! Magnus had a pretty good run. But he went out on his leg just inbetween two big groups of runners. Magnus did some small misstakes but he did a safe run mostely on his own. Sanna did a really good run. She came to the first radio controll in the lead pack. And she finished 43 out of 350 teams. This was the first time she run the first leg since Cle Eleum in 1998, that time she run for OK. Her race put every runner in IF Thor in a good mode.

-- magnus (magnus.wallenborg@hem.utfors.se), April 29, 2001.

Sanna's run put everyone following the race in a pretty good mood, especially her OK fans.

I was standing in line at the bank the other day when I overheard an interesting conversation between two elderly ladies. It went something like this:

Ida, I swear that the next time ESPN fails to show live coverage of Tio-Mila, I'm going to have to whoop some executives with my cane! They could've at least put it on the Deuce!

What's Tio-Mila, Vera?

What?!? Just the biggest o' relay in the world. That's all! I'm disappointed in you Ida!

Oh! Did OK field a team this year?

No. Apparently Northwest Airlines saw fit not to sponser OK with free air tickets and accomodations. This sort of treatment makes me sick! I'm never flying Northwest again!

If OK didn't have a team, why did you care to watch Tio-Mila?

Well, the Wallenborgs were there. Sanna was running a lead-off leg for IF Thor. She kicked some pretty serious butt! Made up for the lack of an OK team, at least in part!

I saw that Vera was wearing one of those classic long, blacksleeved OK T-shirts with the green and white logo on it. I don't know where she picked it up, but I saw one of those going for $800 on Ebay a couple of years ago. I almost wish I'd splurged for it now.
