Nature in our public school systemgreenspun.com : LUSENET : Beyond the Sidewalks : One Thread |
Our sons p.s. teacher has really impressed me with her nature cirriculum this year. She has developed an extensive ecosystem study program including byuilding of individual towers of soda bottles incorporating a terrarium dependent on its own water table. The configuration is such that the student can "pollute" one of the containers "water table " and witness the insect and aqua migrations to the non polluted portion of the self contained ecosystem. I am working on developing an attachment container on DJs' tower to demonstrate how a healthy, active vermiculture can be used to clean the pollutants from the contaminated watertable source to allow reverse migrations and ecological re-establishment.

I think we are going to try establishind worms and plant life within one of our larger bins. Then put his ecotower in to share the common water table "slow leech style. Seal the unit at least 80% so that moisture will accumulate and drip back into the polluted tower. Monitor for return of microbe and insect life to the polluted sample. Do volume and time check to reclaimation.
