04/28 08:14 Foot-and-Mouth Disease Puts 300,000 Jobs at Risk, Paper Says By Alice James

London, April 28 (Bloomberg) -- One in five jobs in the U.K. holiday industry is at risk due to the slump in tourism since the U.K.'s foot-and-mouth disease epidemic began, the Independent newspaper reported, citing the British Tourism Authority.

The industry could see a drop in business of as much as 5 billion pounds ($7.1 billion), threatening as many as 300,000 jobs, according to David Quarmby, the Authority's chairman, the paper said. Quarmby also said it could be several years before tourism returns to the levels seen prior to the Feb. 20 outbreak, the Independent said.

The paper also reported that tests have shown eight of the 13 farm workers suspected of having contracted the disease have been given the all-clear. Tests are being carried out on the remaining five, the Independent said.

The U.K. government this week said it's easing a slaughter policy aimed at containing the disease after the killing of more than 2 million animals brought the virus under control.
