Rev. Leon Sullivan, RIP

Last week Leon Sullivan was called home to eternal rest. His religious-social activist career spanned nearly five decades. For most of that time he was Pastor & Sr. Minister of Zion Baptist Church in Philadelphia, PA. He was the founder of the influential self-help organization OIC in the 60s, creator of the "Sullivan Principles" which promoted US corporate resopnisbility during the era of Apartheid South Africa, and many other grassroot programs aimed at economic enfranchisment. While teaching at a fairly prestigious college in the mid-80s I was a frequent critic of the Sullivan Principles. Professional differences aside, I was always deferential to Rev. Sullivan recognizing that his politics of pragmatism was more friend than foe. His work speaks for itself. QED
