Free Herb Seeds Available!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Beyond the Sidewalks : One Thread

Hi gang! A while back I promised to post a list of what herb seeds I had available, but then this funny thing called life got in the way and I forgot. Sorry! Here's the list, if you want anything just email me with your address and I'll send them out ASAP. I'm not looking for exchanges, I just have a lot of seed that I'm not going to be able to plant and I hate to see it go to waste.

Note: These are seed heads, pods, etc. that I collected off the plants last year, they're not cleaned very well and I can't guarantee the germination rate. They were all grown on an organic herb farm in southern Indiana.

Sherri - thanks for being so generous! I keep saying that I've already got too much to plant, but......

Is pleurisy root the same thing as lungwort? If so, I'd love to try some! I tried to e-mail you, but my e-mail program is being weird - I'm getting mail people have sent me last week and keep getting bounce backs when I try to send mail; unless I've done a reply to an e-mail someone else has sent me. Could you please send me an e-mail so I can use reply to send you my address? Pretty please?!

Just as soon as this prom nonsense is over, I'm gonna chain the kid to the computer so she can fix my e-mail and post some pics - I'll wave plane tickets to Texas in front of her nose, see if that works!!

Pleurisy root and lungwort aren't the same thing. Lungwort is a really pretty plant, but unfortunately I don't have any seeds for it.

Pleurisy root is also called Butterfly weed. It can grow to the size of a small bush and has bright orange flowers that the butterflies love. It's seeds are in pods that look like milkweed. It's a fairly common weed around here.

Polly! It sounds like you have a virus in your email program! I'll start another thread about it.

Sherri, I think that Butterfly weed is a variety of milkweed. There's a whole bunch of different ones, besides common milkweed.

I think my virus is named John - he gets in and messes with stuff on the computer when he shouldn't ought to. Our provider changed some things and we got a letter about what we had to do to update - instead of waiting for Sis or calling tech support, he did it himself. I think he musta left out one little tiny itsy-bisty crucial thing!! Sis'll fix it.

Sherri

If you have time to answer, have you been able to propagate the chinese yam? I have wild yam in the same family and so far have not been sucessful in getting germination.Just wondered if you knew anything I'm missing.

Also, does the organic Herb farm you interned at ever have tours? I pass thru the general area on my way to our old house in W. In. and would love to see what they do, if they are amiable to that sort of thing.Love to get a look at such operations that are hands on.

Polly, that doesn't sound like a virus, more likely a worm - a sometimes pesty one! Red Wiggler Worm ,I think someone said it was called, recently. I picked up one years ago, but I think it serves a purpose,or so I was told, so I've kept it around. Makes me laugh with some of it's antics, and it's worth overlooking any of the little gliches that come along with it,I think, anyway.Hope this helps!

Sherri -

I sent sent that email!! LOL!

Polly - back in IL (if the new owner hasn't pulled it up) I had some lungwort growing. I'll see if my daughter can dig some up and send it if you want - the new guy is a friend of the family.

Its a gorgeous plant, with pink and purple flowers, and dark green, hairy leaves with lighter patches on them. It grows low, and requires literally NO care...

Anyone who's interested, let me know, and I'll see if I can get kiddo to do the digging... (Email me though - Sometimes I forget to check back to my posts!!)

Hi Sharon I wasn't trying to ignore your question, I just didn't see it until last night. Sorry!

I haven't tried growing the chinese yam yet. I know that Susan started hers in the greenhouse, and I think that she did mention that she didn't have a very good germination rate. I checked my notes and my favorite sources for more information but I couldn't find anything else. I'll try to remember to ask Susan next time I talk to her if she has any advice. Did you want me to send you some of the chinese yam?

Susan does give tours of the farm, but only for groups of 10 or more. She also has a holistic healing practice in Bloomington so she has to budget her time wisely.

Tren and Sue, I'm going to the post office on my lunch break and then your seeds will be in the mail.

Tren, I forgot to warn you in the email I sent that coltsfoot spreads like the dickens. It has puffy seedheads like a dandelion, AND underground runners like a mint. You'll probably want to give it it's own little corner far away, or else you'll have coltsfoot in everything!
