Freeh Quitting FBI in June Thanks Bush, Clinton for Opportunity to Serve

W A S H I N G T O N, May 1 — FBI Director Louis Freeh, a holdover from the Clinton administration, is stepping down.

In a lengthy statement released today, Freeh thanks just about everyone he's worked with during 27 years of service — including Attorney General John Ashcroft and President Bush for keeping him on after Clinton's departure — and announces he will "retire from federal service" by the end of the school year in June. "The statement I made at the time of my nomination remains true today," Freeh said in the prepared statement. "The FBi is the greatest organization for law enforcement ever created by democratic society."
