Books on aspects on lf photog

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Large format photography : One Thread

Hi there

Thanks for all the advice it's nice to know I am not alone. I will have to investigate the 2nd hand market first, in South Africa it is rather small. I am going to get Steve Symmons book on LF after reading the good comments about it. The other info I need is books that will cover the techniques for studio work as well as architecture using LF cameras. Any ideas of books that you would reccomend that I get. Thanks and cheers for now

Hi Karl,

This forum is better than any book you can find in the world to "cover the techniques for studio work as well as architecture using LF cameras". Just ask you questions, and you will find expert answers shortly. Cheers,

Karl, I don't know how easily available these are overseas, but Leslie Stroebel's "View Camera Technique" is a classic textbook really. For architecture, I'd recommend Norman McGrath's "Photographing Buildings Inside and Out", as well as the Sinar series of books. Even though these are geared towards their product line, and as books can be expensive, they have some real solid information. But really what you're talking about gets into several different areas beyond view camera use, lighting etc. Depending on the type of photography you're interested in, you might want to look into some lighting theory books as well. Good luck anyways.

Even if you get Simmons' book, I'd suggest that you also buy Leslie Stroebel's "View Camera Technique." I thought that Simmons' book was a good introduction to large format photography but once I read it and made a few photographs I didn't find any further use for it and it's sat untouched on my book shelf for years. Stroebel's book, OTOH, is an in depth reference book that I seem to have occasion to look at several times a year for one reason or another. Just my opinion of course.
