Could someone please explain a little more clearly to me the difference between forming a cut off bend and a river avulsion?

A cut off bend is when a river has cut such a drastic bend that durning a flood the river flows strait and creates an ox bow lake. An avulsion is when durning a flood the river takes a new coarse down a steeper slope. The text book has some good pictures on page 288.
