Do You Wanna Chat?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Beyond the Sidewalks : One Thread

I was wondering if anyone from this forum would be interested in chatting? To me it was kinda scarey, cuz I'm really bad at small talk, but I gave it a try at the CS chat site, and was kinda nice.......whatcha think? We could either pick a time on the same site that doesnt interfere with the regular CS chats, or start a new one? ( I like the first choice better myself, cuz it helps bring us all together better? But I'm open to whatever.....

LOve ya,

I'm sort of interested. Sort of because I already participate two nights a week with a group of friends, and I'm not sure I'll find time for another . . .

I don't care where the chat is. If you all don't want to use the CS site, I know at least one other site that we can use!

I don't know how to access a chat room anymore. Or something. How does one do so?

The one I tried is on the countryside friends msn thingy...?? ya know?

That depends on the chat room, Sheepish. I've been in about 5 different ones, and each one of them worked differently.

Talk City is one that can be accessed by WebTV users, who can't get into a lot of them. However, I can't get into it now. I don't know if that's because I now have a firewall (I didn't when I used to use it a lot). You have to register to use that one. As far as I can tell, it has two advantages: WebTV users can get in, and you can use colored text and smilies (fun, but hardly essential!).

Bravenet has free chat room service. Jim could set something up on the web page, I'm sure. www.bravenet.com This one, once there is a room set up, you just go to the site, wait for the applet to load, enter a name or nickname, hit enter, and in you go. We do sometimes have trouble getting booted out or frozen. I have yet to see a chatroom that didn't have a problem at some point.

Okay so how do you get on the CS chat room???? I am sort of paranoid b/c I think I posted hints (!) that I would like to know how to get on there and since I didn't hear anything from anyone I just figured they didn't want me hogging all the bandwidth (you know me....) Pretend I am an alien...what do you do?...you go to what site and hit what buttons, i.e. Oh yeah, what time GMT?

Thanks. If I don't hear from anyone then I will really know that you are all just being kind.... !

You have to go to the Countryside Friends site, Sheepish. Did you get okayed to visit there? If so, the chat button is on the left of the page.

I see that Lehmans has a chat room too, at CountryLife.net. However, we wouldn't necessarily have that all to ourselves.

Oh sheepish , you are almost as funny as sharon!

Lets try once again to see if you are banned from chatrooms the world over!

Try this

The CS folks do their thing at Eastern Time 8, 12, 4 and 8 I think; so we could join em or have a different schedule...... If you cant get in, you probably havent registered yet; most likely you will figure out how to do so, but if not, ask one of us (not me, I have no idea how I did it!)

Well right now it's 2135 PDT so that would make it um, kind of late EDT. I guess I have to plan my time better! So if I get home at 6 and do my chores, and come in at 9, I'm SOL. Maybe the a.m. would be better.

Thanks for the info. You may see me. I think I am a registered offender at Countryside. Or I will be shortly if I don't get a grip!

LOL.

I would like to chat with you guys,AM. is good for me too. Tren

sheepish, I never got o.k.'d for the cs chat room and have also mentioned it and never heard anything so it would not be the place of choice for me. paranoid? me??? fear of rejection??? probably....

-- Anonymous, May 05, 2001

Well then let's go somewhere else and play. After my last foray to CS and my little tantrum on another thread, I'm not sure I want to hang with some of those folks (although I don't even know who's over there.) I still like most of 'em!

And....I spend SO much time here, what will I do if I get hooked into a chatroom?

OK guys,

I put up a chat room on the Yggdrasill web site. When you surf in you'll see a button on the left side that says "chat now!". Click on that and go from there. I used Joy's recommendation and went with Bravenet.

Bravenet looks like a cool web site... they have a LOT of cool options for customizing an individual's web site - voting/polling service, greeting cards, click-2-talk, scrolling news headlines, and a TON of other things. I'm going to check out some of the other features when I get a little more time.

And a big thanks to you, Joy, for recommending them.

Good times for me for chatting would be: 9 or 10 am CDT and 7 or 8 pm CDT. I'm awful about remembering to chat, though. Patty and Renee invited me to their MSN chat and I kept forgetting to go! :-)

If we do get some definite times worked out from you all for chatting I'll post them to the web site.

I went and tested the chat room, as much as I could without anyone else there to chat with. Seems the same as the other. It isn't my FAVORITE chat format, but it's one of the easiest to get into that I've seen. Sometimes, it takes awhile, usually on weekends, when the whole 'Net is congested.

If you get in during chat and then get tossed out later, when you try to get back in it will probably tell you that your nickname is in use. Just enter something else that makes you recognizable. Like if I couldn't get back in under Joy F, I'd try something like Joy52 or something similar. After you get kicked out, your name "stays" on the board awhile. Eventually it disappears. Some people have more trouble than others. If we don't like this one, we can find something else.

Okay, we've got folks on Eastern time, Central time, and Pacific time. Anyone on Mountain time? My other chats are Tuesday and Saturday evenings, about 9pm Central time. Evenings work for me, mornings sometimes. Maybe we want to set a couple of times, one in the a.m.'s and one in p.m.'s.

Now I am wondering if I can be in two Bravenet chats at the same time. I can do it, just don't know if the Bravenet set-up will allow that.

Wow Jim, you did it. I tryed it out and was able to get in and everything!!!! I have only "chatted" on AOL with my friends and children, only once did I try a chat room. I need to learn about this time zone thing. I am on Eastern Daylight Savings Time. How does that compare with others??? Thanks for setting it up Jim.

Thanks for the additional info, Joy.

I'm going to be away from the forum taking care of miscellaneous stuff that will probably take up my time for a few days. I hope to be back on Wednesday. You guys don't get into too much trouble while I'm gone, ok? (grin)

I'd definitely be interested in a chat room. But I'm a REALLY slow typist!! And not really much of a conversationalist, but I promise to try my best at jumping in. I'm on the East Coast and anytime between the hours of 9am to 4pm would work for me, but I'm flexible! Bear in mind that I also have a Webtv...don't know what the limitations are, plus the fact that I'm computer illiterate!!

Dianne , dont know where the problem is with your membership .I do not have an application for you .If you signed up and put just a little info about yourself it should have been approved. Not sure why some of you don't feel comfortable coming to cs chat site .We are not a part of the country side forum and do not carry there rules.Seems kinda silly we where all together before this fighting and most got along fine.Once again all are welcome .One rule BE NICE .hope to see ya there .email me at home if you have problems~Patty

-- Anonymous, May 05, 2001

Patty, I don't have a problem with CS chat, but I am suspicious of MSN. Maybe I am paranoid. Also, I thought that since some here weren't registered there, Bravenet would be easier to get into.

BTW, I tried being on 2 Bravenet chat sites simultaneously tonight. It doesn't work!

-- Anonymous, May 05, 2001

Joy , we havent had any problems with msn .I have it members only to keep trouble out .I figure someone just brousing wont bother signing up .If you would like come on over ,all are welcome as long as they remember the 1 rule .

-- Anonymous, May 05, 2001

Eeeeeek!!!! You want me to do WHAT!!!! Chat with you!!!! AHHHHHHH NO. Not that!!!

I'm a terrible conversationalist.I don't type either.I already get in trouble with my incomprehensible sense of humor when I actually have time to think about what I write and review it.Now you want me to talk to you spontaneously? Oh my god, this is too much for this hermit to take. You are wanting me to act actually social and somewhat normal?

I'm going to go now and get me some of that lemon balm cooler.I think I need it.I'm pretty shook up.Maybe a stiffer drink is needed. It's pretty early on a Sunday AM. Well, what the heck, pass me over that whiskey bottle, Nick.I'll be needing some fortification.

Okay...1725 PDT and nobody in the chatroom. Time to head back out into the sunshine!

later!

-- Anonymous, May 06, 2001

What! No one logged on at midnight? What do you people do?!? Sleep???!

-- Anonymous, May 07, 2001

I can't get the name field to accept ANY name. Tried earlier, tried now (12:42 a.m. CDT) -- no go!

-- Anonymous, May 07, 2001

Joy , you need to use the name and password that belongs to your hotmail or passport account and which one you used to sign up with .I was in the cs chat from 8-10:30 last night .Not sure when everyone else left .

-- Anonymous, May 07, 2001

Thanks, Patty, but I was trying the Bravenet chat site. The field simply would not accept any input. I'd type, but nothing would appear. Probably some glitch here -- I think my computer was having a snit fit. It seems to be working now . . . .

I can't ever remember to go to the MSN chat room at the times listed, or else I'm not available at those times! One of these days (nights?) I'll get in there!

See you were meant to be on msn .Hehe
