Washed Wool Blanket - what to do?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I have a Hudson Bay blanket that's really pretty - light yellow with white stripes. The problem is that it has been washed. Can I restore it? If not, any tips on felting and mitten sewing? Any other ideas of what to do with it? Thanks

Did you put it in the dryer? Ditch it if you did.....but if you just washed it, rewet it, stretch it back out as far as you can, tacking it to a board, letting it air dry, and redoing the above. The fibers will only pull out so far before distorting the weave. Vicki

Use it for a child or as a throw for your couch. It'll be softer and warmer than ever!

Washing ain't a problem if it's done right. If not, then you DO have a problem. It might be recoverable (see above), or not - depends on how bad. It has probably at least starting felting (you know that). Have you considered making a felt cloak, then waterproofing it? If what you can do involves using it as felt (cloak, toys, mittens, mat, whatever), then you should make sure that the felting is carried to a conclusion (so more doesn't do more) before you start cutting and sewing.

If it's really bad, it will make good potholder lining. I hope you manage to recover it.
