Looking for a tripod for a Graphic View II

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Large format photography : One Thread

I have a Graphic View II with the tilt head for a tripod mount. What should I be looking for in a tripod since it has a tilt head.

Some suggestions....

An older wooden tripod with a flat head.

Set of bogen legs (no head)

Standard tripod with a head (Is there a problem with having 2 tilts?) some suggestions referenced a tiltall

An older Majestic tripod. (it was mentioned the large head would interfere with the graphic tilt head.

Any have one of these camera?? and can suggest a tripod..

thanks!!

Whatever you do, get one with a very long fixing screw. The Graphic View is notorious for falling off tripods because only a few threads were engaged into the GV panhead.

Pete,

I worked with a Graphic View II for years and I loved it. I used a couple of different tripods over the time I had it but my favorite was a Bogen 3021 with a 3047 head.

Today I would recommend (and indeed use) a Bogen 3275 geared head but I think the 3021 legs are a good compromise between rigidity, stability and reasonable weight.

I left the Graflex tilt head on the camera (really the only option) but removed the long locking handle and replaced it with a standard hex bolt. All tilting and panning was done with the Bogen tripod head.

The Tiltall is a classic tripod but in my opinion too light for 4x5 and the head is really an akward design to work with. The Bogen (Manfrotto) 3275 has a nice quick release and both the fore and aft and port and starboard tilts are gear driven making it very easy to get the camera exactly where you want it to be.

Good shooting,

If you ever want to get rid of the Graphic's built-in head, check out http://www.bigcamera.com/articles/GraphicViewTripodFix.htm ... if you are handy with tools, it shouldn't be too difficult of a project.

I would think that the 3021 would be to light of a tripod?

Would I be able to skip the head and use the mount of the tripod.

and just use the bogen legs?
